Drivers for PCI Simple Communications Device

Question

I just purchased a used Dell XPT T600R cpu.

I loaded Win2000pro on it and everything is working fine (I think) except for this PCI Simple Communications Device which comes up in Device Manager with the yellow question mark... when I remove it the found new hardware wizard finds it again but it cannot find ANY drivers for it.

I went to the Dell downloads and there are drivers for the usual stuff but none for this... is this the modem? because I do not see any modem listed in device manager and it has one.

Also, I am trying to install a Linksys Wireless PCI network adapter card (which I have successfully installed on two other machines in my network) but it will NOT load the drivers even when I point it right to them on either the HDD or the CD.

I HAVE enabled the plug and play in BIOS. Anything else I should be doing?

It may be possible to download and install the Belarc Advisor to identify the modem. You can check the available drivers from the Downloads section to see if any of them match, otherwise, check the manufacturers support site for drivers. Can you provide which model Linksys wireless PCI card you are trying to install?

Thanks for the reply. In all honesty... I don't really care about the modem as this PC will be connecting to the internet through the Linksys PCI adapter wireless network card model# WMP54G

My concern is that the whole PCI BUS thingy (or whatever controls the PCI slots) is bad since the only two PCI things plugged in are not being recognized. AND as I said - even when I point the hardware wizard to the exact location & driver inf file... it still will NOT install the driver nor recognize the PCI device.

Is there a way to diagnose or analyze the PCI thingy? My next attempt (probably tomorrow after Easter - I am having 30+ guests today) will be to remove a working linksys card from one of the other PCs and try it in this Dell. That will rule out a bad card. I have downloaded the Dell 32 bit dignostic tool hoping that might help but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Any other thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PCI Simple Communications Device = Dell modem without drivers installed. you can either install the drivers for the modem to get rid of this listing, or remove the modem if you aren't going to use it.

The shared slot is an either/or proposition, the cards tab's tail the opposite directions so that they fill the same exit slot of the case. So if you use the ISA slot, you cannot put a card in the bottom PCI slot or if you use the bottom PCI slot, you cannot use the ISA. There is no way to put 1 card in each.

OK - thanks for all the replies... back to my original concern... (I am also posting this as a new thread)... when I originally posted this request it was because this "PCI simple communications controller was not loading and I *thought* it was related to the Linksys PCI adapter card not loading/working properly...

I have since located the PCI Bus controller under the Systems device tab and it appears to be working properly according to device manager.

My primary concern is to get the Linksys wireless adapter card model WMP54G to work. As I said I do not really care about the modem UNLESS I cannot get the network card to work and then I'll need the modem.

So why won't this Dell Dimensions XPS T600r system running Windows 2000 professional recognize or allow me to manuall load drivers for these PCI devices?

Could it be a bad install of win2000pro OR is it possible there is a major hardware (PCI slot or Motherboard) problem with this unit?

Any ideas are WELCOME!

Did you change the BIOS plug and pray setting before this problem?  The plug and play setting in the BIOS should be set to ' No '.    That way the BIOS will detect any hardware change and update itself accordingly.  Even with the ' No ' setting in the BIOS the Windows operating system will still detect the hardware change and prompt you to install the drivers.
