DVD Playback help!

Question

Hi. I just got my new Dell E520 this morning and so far I am impressed, even Vista is behaving itself! However when I played a DVD full screen it kept jumping, not skipping but just not smooth playback. Its fine when i only have it on a small area of the screen. I have the on board graphics card and a 22' monitor, 2GB RAM running Vista Premium. Can anyone tell me what the problem might be? I have the screen res set at 1680 - 1050 at 60hz. Thanks

Thanks for your reply! What graphics card would you recommend? I have been told a 7600GT is a good, if a bit basic card. I did not get the machine for gaming as such but being able to play a few things might be nice. Any recommendations gratefully received. With it only having a 305w psu I take it my options are a bit limited. and I do not want to pay a lot if possible, the wife will kill me !!! Thanks in advance.

The integrated graphics might be struggling to keep up with a dvd at 1680x1050 resolution, especially with effects happy Vista running in the background.  Before upgrading to a PCIE card, make sure you have the latest chipset drivers for your system.

Thats good news, is the 7600GT a good mid range card to go for? Is it the best at that price point? Any other options would be great! Cheers

The 7600GT is an excellent card for under 100 bucks (with rebate).  It will render most games with decent FPS at good resolution and detail settings.  The only drawback is that you're not going to get DX10, which will be the norm a few years from now.  For about 25 bucks more, you can get a decent  8600GT from EVGA that should be good well into the DX10 era.  If you choose to go the route of an 8 series card, also check out the XFX 8600 GT.  It's factory overclocked and will give a noticable increase in performance over the EVGA card (although whether the overclocking is worth 25 dollars goes to personal taste).  As with the 7600GT, your PSU will run these cards just fine.   Personally, I'd probably go with the 8600 since the extra money is worth a more futureproof card.  That said, I don't expect any exlusively DX10 games to come out in the next year (maybe even two years) so you certainly won't be in bad shape if you choose the 7600.  It is unquestionably the best performing card in its price range.

I have just seen a ATi Radeon X1950 PRO 256MB PCI-Express for the same money as a 7600GT. Is this a better card than the 7600GT? Pro's/cons would be great. Also will the x1950 even work with my Dell, especiall with the poor PSU? Cheers

I am not going to upgrade my PSu at the moment, so I will stick with buying a 7600GT. Can someone help though. I have just got a new E520 and I have heard there is no p10 connector? Don't I need one of these to power my card?? Does the 7600GT need a molex connector? HELP! I was just about to order it when I read this somewhere!!
