Erratic Mouse Behavior

A friend of mine bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 computer a month ago. With it came a USB optical mouse with Dell written on it. While we were moving the mouse it erratically jumped to either the top left edge of the screen or the bottom left edge of the screen at varying intervals. It was annoying and we called Dell about it. The tech rep walked us through many steps and after some troubleshooting decided it was the mouse. So they sent us a new mouse (same type) and we returned the old one.

Well the new one isn't quite as bad but it still does the jumping to the edge of the screen periodically. It also doesn't glide smoothly across the screen. To get it to move we seem to have to pick it up from the desk for a moment and lay it back down, then it works for that moment.

We have tried it without a pad and with a mouse bad but no difference.

We now have come to the conclusion that it isn't the mouse but our computer. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Jean

I am having the same problems. It's as if the mouse has a mind of it's own. An answer to this problem would be nice. Hate having to have paid extra for something that works like this!

Well, now that there are three of us in the same boat, this must mean that something is definitely wrong with the Dell computers. I hope someone out there will give us a hint on how to repair this annoying problem.

Hopefully soon.

I too am having the same problem. I've already had the original mouse replaced and at first it seemed better but has gotten progressively worse.

All,

I can assure you there are no known issues regarding this other than a virus.

Can everybody tell us what they have as far as hardware and software is concerned.  Let's start there and see what we can find.

Well if it is a virus issue it came from Dell as my computer is new and has been doing it from day one. Software is Windows XP on a Dimension 4600.

Hi,

I sure hope you can help us.

My friend has a new Dell Dimension 2400 running XP Home Edition. She has only the software that came with her system. The mouse has done this from day one. She isn't very knowledgeable on the computer so she hasn't really added or changed anything as she only uses email and internet.

All,

I'm not saying that it is a virus, I only said that the only known issues I could find like this were viruses.  I'm only trying to see if something develops, to see if we can find a pattern.

Dimension 2400   Pent. 4   2.66GHz  256MB RAM   Windows XP

I can print out a complete inventory from Device Manager and fax that to you if you would like.

I agree with previous post that if it is a virus it came that way.

Cindy,

I'm sorry, I never said it was a virus.  I stated that the only known issues I could find related to something like this was the result of a virus.  I guess I should have said I could not find any known issues.

I asked that everybody post some basic information and see if we could find a common thread and maybe then find a solution.

Virus - shmyrus. What a cop out. You guys bought a bunch of cheap Chinese mice that don't pass quality control and now you have customers complaining and no solutions.

And the best response you have is virus? Sorry but I logged on to this board to find a solution not a cop out.

My machine is brand new with McAfee Security Center installed by you and I have had this problem from day one. I switched my mouse with a coworker who uses a track ball on the identical machine as mine and the new mouse behaves the same. I checked with another coworker with the identical machine and he has the same problem I do.

So here are my thoughts:

1. Cheap, substandard workmanship

2. Poorly written mouse driver

I replaced the old (non-usb) wired Logitech wheel mouse this year with a Microsoft USB Basic Optical Mouse (made in China.)  The original mouse worked flawlessly.  I have a Dimension L700cx plus Windows XP Home Upgrade.  When I replaced the mouse XP automatically installed the Microsoft PS/2 Driver (dated to the year 2001) when I plugged it in.  Occasionally, maybe once every 2-3 hours,  the cursor suddenly goes to one corner of the screen.

Hi.

I just hooked up my new Dimension 8300, XP Pro system yesterday (full info below) and the same erratic issue is happening with the Optical USB mouse.....the mouse speeds on it's own to the left corner intermittently...as you can imagine, very annoying and frustrating!

Thanks for your time!

Okay everybody.  Add another mouse problem to your collection.  You can forget the virus problem.  I too just got a brand new DELL 8600 with XP Pro and my optical mouse did the same thing right out of the box.  DELL was absolutely no help at all.  I finally got a replacement mouse from them and so far the new one is working just fine.  I even plugged the original mouse into my old DELL (6 1/2 years old) and it did the same thing.  So much for DELL's virus theory.  Seems to me like they have a quality issue and don't want to admit it.

Better than a reply, How about replacing our mice with ones that WORK RIGHT?
