Erratic Mouse Behavior
A friend of mine bought a new Dell Dimension 2400 computer a month ago. With it came a USB optical mouse with Dell written on it. While we were moving the mouse it erratically jumped to either the top left edge of the screen or the bottom left edge of the screen at varying intervals. It was annoying and we called Dell about it. The tech rep walked us through many steps and after some troubleshooting decided it was the mouse. So they sent us a new mouse (same type) and we returned the old one.
Well the new one isn't quite as bad but it still does the jumping to the edge of the screen periodically. It also doesn't glide smoothly across the screen. To get it to move we seem to have to pick it up from the desk for a moment and lay it back down, then it works for that moment.
We have tried it without a pad and with a mouse bad but no difference.
We now have come to the conclusion that it isn't the mouse but our computer. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated.

The white paper has mostly cleared up my problem. too, but still I would like to know if the mouse you are giving your friend cures the problem.
Mine is not 100% but absolutely nothing as it was when new. I can live with this but if I could have it work perfectly I would prefer that even if I have to buy my own mouse.Thanks,

I guess she is just learning to live with it but I have an extra mouse that I bought a short time ago (IBM) and I'm going to see her this Saturday and will let her try that one out.
Otherwise she is coping with what she has.

Within the past 3 weeks I have purchased a Dimension 2400 and a Dimension 4600 - both systems have exhibited the same eratic Mouse Cursor behavior since day one out of the box. The cursor flys to a corner randomly quite often. (USB Optical mouse). I have been using Dell pc's for a very long time..... I have also been using Optical USB mice on Dell and other pc's for a very long time - I have never had this problem before - this Thread is very long for a reason -- there is a problem with these mice and Dell needs to acknowledge it.

She decided not to try another mouse that I had brought along and since she seemed happy with the original mouse, I left well enough alone.
I'm not quite sure what has caused this problem not to be so annoying but maybe the white paper does work after all. Also, a few weeks ago we disconnected the mouse and keyboard from the computer and reseated them. Maybe this helped.
I'm just not sure but my friend seems fairly happy with what she has so I will not push the issue on her.

And my mouse only misbehaved while in the games. Or jigsaw puzzle. But the white paper has, as I have stated, works almost perfectly, but not that 100%.
I have asked Kim Komando to address this problem and will let you know the reply when it arrives. And "if"!

I bought a new mouse Logitech 310 mx and its great !!!!
But when I use the Dell mouse pad the problem remains , even if much smaller , but the pointer does some random trips and this time I can redo them by keeping the pointer in the same area and repeat the movement!!!!

I have a new XPS gen 3, with the same mouse problem.
For no reason, the cursor will suddenly jump to the opposite side of the screen.
Doing a google search, this problem appears a common one with optical mice of different manufacturers.
I could not find a solution.
One poster in google groups suggested the problem is with the CPU - which randomly drops signals coming from the mouse.
According to that poster, this problem can't be fixed.

I am having the same problem as everyone else. I have also found out that the white sheet of paper helps. At the same time, I would like to find out if we are all talking about the same mouse or different models/manufacturers. If everyone can post what kind of mouse is giving them this problem, this info will help us escalate this issue with Dell. my prolem mouse is DP/N: 0D1161 P/N: 20-15601DL01 S/N: 407007848 M/N: M056U0, look on the back of the mouse to find out the part #.

I can't accurately read those numbers, even with my pretty strong glasses.
But are you sure that's the model number ? as opposed to a serial number ?
In any case my mouse is a Dell serial mouse, 2 button + scroll - I think there is only one model in this category.

You must use a mouse pad that is solid in color. No designs or yellow and do not use it on wood grain desk top.
This will take care of the jumping mouse problem.

okay. there are two issues here,
1. not all mice are created equal. why is one working prefectly and another jumps at will, even if every 3 or 4 hours? if you compare, let us say a Dell primax mouse and a Dell Logitech mouse, their characteristics are not identical. just like a maxtor 40GB drive is not the same as a WesternDigital 40GB hard drive, there are quality differences. When you buy from Dell, you choose a 40GB hard drive, they decide which manufacturer offers them the best deal and we have to live with that. that i believe is the issue here with the different dell mice that are shipped with the various systems.
2. which mouse pad is the ideal surface for an optical mouse? it turns out that the ideal surface is a manila folder. go figure. if an erratic mouse is driving you nuts, just trade your mouse pad for a manila folder and all your troubles will go away. but this is not the solution for the bigger issue of quality.

Why spend money on a mouse pad when a piece of white poster board, or card stock because they are heavier than plain paper, does so well? My poster board is partly stuck under my monitor so it doesn't go anywhere. And it doesn't crumple up.
