"..Error in GDI.exe"

Recently, I've been getting many error messages of the type "Program [name] has caused an error GDI.exe and has shut down" where [name] is one of several programs that have caused this error and shut down. This is in Windows ME. It seemed to have started after I installed software for a a trackball. I know I can roll back to an earlier system restore date. Has anybody seen this error type before? Should I roll back to an earlier restore point?

TIA
David

For troubleshooting purposes, uninstall your trackball software, and then attach and use the mouse originally provided with your system. If the errors no longer occur, you may want to check with the trackball manufacturer for updated drivers or any possible workarounds.

If you continue receiving errors, what programs normally cause the errors to appear?
