External DVD not recognized
I have an Optiplex gx620 with a DVD/CD rom. I purchased an External DVD +R/RW Lightscribe drive with USB cable (Iomagic). I purchased this from Dell.com. When I plug it in, the drive powers on, but my computer does not recognize it. I have tried the Diagnostics Utility and the other suggestion about bios and the drives all show enabled. I am not sure but I think it is refurbished; could it be that the USB port is bad? I tried the drive in another computer and nothing, and I tried plugging different USB cables into my ports and they all work.
Running XP Pro. Any suggestions?

Sorry for asking an obvious question (or two) perhaps, but you're plugging in the USB cable and also the power cable from a wall outlet to the drive, right? When you say different usb cables worked, do you mean with other usb devices? And you've tried the external dvd on another computer and it did not work? If you go to device manager and expand the usb section, what is listed there?

is it listed under Disk Management??
Start>RUN> type "diskmgmt.msc" NO quotes of course, and hit ENTER

It is not listed under disk managment.
Yes, it is plugged into the wall with an AC power cord and the USB cable from the device to my computer. yes, other devices worked in my usb ports, I thought maybe that one of my ports was bad. I tried plugging it into my kids laptop and again, nothing happens.
When I turn it on, green light comes on and then a pretty loud fan, it's louder than my desktop tower.

Since other devices work in the usb ports and this dvd doesn't work in either of two computers, it's time to return it.
