external hard drive

i just got a Western Digital 250 GB premium Edition Hard Drive with USB 2 or Firewire 400 to use for storing photographs. I have a Dell Dimension 8400 pentium 4 processor 560 (33.6GHx)with HT Tech and 1MB casche + 2GB DDR2 SDrRAM at 533MHZ running XP prof. i use Photoshop CS2 and work with raw photos.

when i connect the hard drive (i used the usb connection - maybe i should have used the firewall?) i can save files to it, however if i don't turn it off before i turn the computer off when i turn the computer on again it stops booting at the hit Ctrl 1 instruction but doesn't do anything when i hit Ctrl 1. i then shut the computer down disconnect the external and boot up again where it stops at the F1 command which then completes bootup.

i know i can just disconnect the external from the task bar before shutting down but i'm worried i don't have something set up right. do i need to partition a drive? i have a serial ATA RAID O with dual 160 GB hard drives. should i have partitioned that drive to a RAID 1? Sorry to be so winded but i'm just a heavy user not a techie at all but my main use is photoshop CS2 with raw files so any help anyone can contribute would be ever so greatly appreciated.
