fixing ram

got a spare ram for my dell 8400
i know where it goes etc and it is the same as in my pc already..but it is not like fitting a normal ram in a normal pc...dell like to take control and when i put it in it said dell as  recognised a new ram.

how do i go about going through the set up without having to phone dell as i takes for ever to get through etc.etc.

i have two 512mb sticks in already is it okay to run on three also ?

You'll want to add memory in MATCHED PAIRS, adding a single RAM module will force the system into single channel mode, & you'll take a heavy performance hit.

As long as each channel has matching modules, it will run in dual channel mode.

EXAMPLE:

Row 1  Slot 1 Channel A      256 MB  (White Tabs)

Row 2  Slot 3 Channel A      1 GB      (Black Tabs)

Row 3  Slot 2 Channel B      256 MB (White Tabs)

Row 4  Slot 4 Channel B      1 GB     (Black Tabs)
