Floppy Confused

Question

I installed a new floppy drive which tells me to format my disks which are already formatted. If I format..it works.  But I shouldn't have t format since the floppies are aready formatted. In safe mode, I now have drive A and drive B.  Confused?  You bet ya!  Also, when in safe mode why does it scatter my icons on the desktop?  This is so frustrating.  Help!  Running ME on Dimension 4100.   Thanks. Jan

As I explained in your previous post on the same topic, floppies are easily corrupted. The system sees a floppy, tries to read it, cannot and asks if you want to format it.   You should never keep anything important on a floppy.

Sounds like something is not right with A and B both showing up. Check the cable that is betwween the floppy and the motherboard and see that the drive has been placed to the right location on it

I don't quite understand your reply.  The only cable I unplugged when I installed the new floppy drive was the one connected directly to the floppy drive and the power connector.  And there's only the 2 plugs on the drive.  But yet when I am in safe mode and go to my computer - it shows an A and B drive, but not if I'm in the regular start up.

Some cables have 2 sets of pin holes on them. one set for floppy A and the other for floppy B. That is what I was referring to

Do I need to go into control panel and remove the original A and then 'Add New Hardware' so it will read the new floppy drive?  From what I've read, the computer should just find it, right?

That is correct, however, what was your reason for changing the floppy in the first place? Could be something else causing your problem.

My original floppy drive was making a buzzing noise and kept telling me to formatt or that another program had locked it...something to that effect.  After reading posts on this website, I figured I needed a new floppy drive.  I no longer have the buzzing noise, but it still keeps saying to format.  If I format (even tho the floppies I'm using are already formatted) it seems to work.
