FREEEEEEEZE???

For the last couple of days, my computer seems to be freezing all the time, ie. filling in online application forms by pressing tab to move from one text box to another, to submit application forms, to load Outlook express 5.0 takes me 30 seconds, totally no reponse from my computer, therefore I press ctrl+alt+delete, and nothing happens, sometimes it does work, so it restarts, then everything's fine..but later on, freezes, restart again, etc...please HELP!..what's wrong? and what can I do to solve this problem??????????????

no, I'm not running Attune....any other suggestions...i been told to free up sys. resources and disabling items from startup folder and I've done all this but still having problems...help...could the fact that i'm running two antivirus programs (mcafee and norton's) be the problem?..the freezing up of my computer seem to have started the day I installed norton's.

Yes!!! Running both McAfee and Norton could absolutely cause the problems you're having. I'd strongly recommend getting rid of McAfee, completely rid of it, and sticking with Norton. Instructions for getting completely rid of McAfee can be found here. Good luck

Running Attune? Program loaded from Dell, supposed to be a live troubleshooter so to speak, didn't work out that way. Known now to cause numerous freeze and crash faults.
Check startup folder and see if Attune set to load at startup. If so, disable and restart computer, problem should be solved!
Look for previous posts from Denny Denham regarding this issue for a fantastic site for freeing up system resources and disabling items from startup folder.

Concur with Bob11! Never use two utilities that are trying to do the same thing. Best choice would be as suggested and get rid of McAfee, keep Norton.
I have two new Dell systems, both running Norton AntiVirus, and both are problem free. Only issue I had was with Attune in XPS-T700r. Disabled Attune, no problems since. (except from occasional updates performed by two year old son!)
Good luck

ok..sounds like i should really rid mcafee totally...btw, why mcafee and not Norton's?? i thought that running two different antivirus programs would be just the SAME thing as running two different internet browswers (eg. IE and Netscape Navigator)

I know this is late but do a search in this conference, and in the Software - Windows98 and Software - Other/Don't Know conferences and you'll see why you should get rid of McAfee. Also, Dell doesn't ship with McAfee any longer, they use Norton now.....

P.S. It's not at all like running two internet browsers since they are no where NEAR as invasive as an anti-virus program.

k..I uninstalled mcafee, kept norton's..still having these problems: Help!!! for some reason, I still can't initalize outlook express right away. It takes quite some time. Then when I am on the internet and typing something in specific fields it takes forever to tab and to show my cursor. What could be wrong? Corrupted files or what?

Hi,
When you Uninstalled McAfee, it took a needed driver with it. Do this:
1. Put your Win98 CD in your CD ROM.
2. X out splash screen when it appears.
3. Start > Run > type in sfc > OK.
4. Put check in the Extract one file.....box > Type in Imagehlp.dll > Start.
5. Restore From: Browse to e:\Win98 (where e is the drive with the Win98 CD loaded)
6. Save file in: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM > OK.
7. OK next screen to save backup.
8. You should get a successfully extracted > choose to reboot.
This should solve you issue with OE and should speed up IE also. Any more problems could be related to other things so post back if there are more issues.

Thank you so very much...PROBLEMS SOLVED!!! btw, why did the uninstaller remove such an important file?

Hi,
Evidentally, the McAfee software installs a copy of this driver which overwrites the Windows version and removes the association for anything except McAfee.
What happened to you is standard when uninstalling this software. Good luck with the Norton! This is from a loyal, satisfied McAfee user.
