GeForce FX5200 problems installing on a 2400 (Help!)

When you boot up into safe mode, go into device manager and disable the onboard, apply changes and reboot, and everything should be working ok :)

When you first disabled the onboard, did you do it in normal mode?

If so, then re-enable the onboard and reboot, so you are back to the start with just the card and drivers installed... then attach the monitor cable to the PCI card and make sure the bios is set to Auto, save changes and boot into safe mode, disable the onboard again, apply changes and reboot, see if that works..

Yeah, after your first post, I had the bios set to auto, booted in safe mode (with monitor attached to the new card), went into device manager and disabled the Intel "extreme" driver.  I re-booted in normal mode and the same problem happened.

I got the same card and I just now got it to show.  Lot of restarting and unplugging, I couldn't just put the card in and plug monitor to it and go, I had to take a long way around.  Now I'm having the same problem as you.  It will boot up, I even see GeForce on the black screen while its booting, then I get as far as the windows xp screen, not the blue one, but the black one before the blue one then it goes blank and the monitor power light turns orange.   If you figure this out, please get back to me.

I just had the same problem tonight, and it took forever to figure out, but here it goes... First your going to have to uninstall the the new card and drivers from the device manager, and activate the old intel stuff. Now shut down, open the PC and remove the new card from the PCI slot, but take note of where you removed it from. Restart (making sure your monitor is connected to the old VGA port), and check to make sure you have all of the new drivers/hardware off the system. Run disc cleanup real quick (it'll help), and if you system needs defragged, you should do so now (or atleast check to see if it needs done or not). Restart the computer... Now, go back into the device manager and disable the intel video card/drivers, again... Shut down you computer, unhook all of the cords, open the PC, and install the new card again, but in a different PCI slot (the bottom/last PCI slot ended up working for me). Now, close it up, and boot it up again... It should work. Don't put the driver CD in yet, let new hardware wizard pick up on the new device. When it says searching for software, go ahead and stick the CD in there, and it should install everything from the new hardware wizard. Restart, and it should work. Now just go get the newest drivers, restart one last time, set your desired resolution, and your done. God, what a pain... Anyway, worked for me, hope it works for you! Out-ness. (Just so you know, I'm on the same exact system as you, the only difference being I only have like 330MB of RAM)

I got mine working this morning too. I think we ended up doing similar things, but I think I came to the conslusion in a different way.

Here's the problem as I see it:

When I installed the PCI card, I installed it in the first PCI slot (nearest to the CPU). Since XP could see both the PCI card and the onboard video, it thought it was operating under a multiple monitor situation. The problem is that it when operating multiple monitors with two PCI cards, the primary monitor is in the first PCI slot, and the secondary monitor is in the second PCI slot. Well XP was thinking the onboard video was the primary monitor and I think it was confused by the PCI card in slot 1 when it was expecting the secondary monitor to be in slot 2.

So I moved the card to slot 2 (the middle of 3 PCI slots) and it worked. After doing that and successfully booting with the new PCI card, I went into Device Manager and disabled the Intel "Extreme" graphic drivers. Now I have my bios set to auto, the PCI card in the 2nd (middle) slot, the Nvidia drivers installed and running, and the Intel drivers installed still, but disabled.

So the bottom line is, if you're having the same problem, try moving the card to different slots, then mess with the multiple monitor option in Control Panels/Display/Settings until you get it to work.

Everthing is as it should be and working fine but with one minor problem: In the Display control panel, under the Settings tab, it still shows that I have two monitors. The primary monitor is listed as something like: "E773 monitor on NVIDIA fx5200", and the secondary monitor is listed as "NVIDIA fx5200" (not the exact wording, but close. The good thing is, the Intel driver isn't listed at all, which means I successfully disabled it. The bad thing is the system still seems to think it has two monitors, although it seems that monitor #2 is disabled.

All in all, everything works good, and the card runs fine. So if I can't get rid of the second monitor in the display control panel, I guess I'll live with it. Under Device Manager, there is only one Nvidia driver installed and active, and the Intel driver which is installed, but disabled.

Its strange that the card would only work in that slot, there are numerous people with the same system, with the card installed in slot 1....but saying that, there's alot of people where the card just would not install, wierd

Finally got it, i tried the bottom slot and it booted then blacked out, then switched to middle slot and now i'm using it.  Something still doesn't seem right.  I have tried it on Return to Castle Wolfenstein, single player, and multiplayer and have not seen any improvements in my frame rate.  Any suggestions???????????????

Just replied and it didn' show up.  Anyway,  I had to restart my computer and it automatically detected and installed all the intel integrated stuff, so now i'm back to square one.  It thinks i got a dual monitor setup too.  BIOS set to automatic,  what can I do to keep this from happening every time I restart?????????

Dont uninstall the onboard, right click on the oboard in device manager and disable, also make sure you have the latest drivers from Nvidia...
