gf6800 fan

Question

hey guys, i was thinking of modding my card after the warranty expires.

1)has anyone tried to change the stock fan on the 6800 to a zalman/nv silencer?
2)has it been successful? as in, any dell errors? i hope the card isnt oem:( just like the pc fan and psu.

first off -I haven't done this so this is only my speculation...

1- I'm pretty sure that the Zalman/NV Silencer for that model should work fine, check with the manufacturer to see if they have any data on this, or maybe someone who has done this here will respond.

2- Even if it is OEM, I think it should work - have you downloaded RivaTuner and experimented with overclocking yet? I suspect the card could be oc'd even if it is a minor amount - just be sure to increase the memory and core clocks in small increments as you go.

yep i have looked into all the installations. the fans are compatible with this card.
i just didnt want to install a new fan and find that somehow dell doesnt recognize it.

so far i have oc'ed it to 340/700 from 325/600 with no change in temps, so i guess thats good. but a better cooling soln might be helpful

Drivers from the nVidia site can be used to overclock the gf6800. You need a minor registry edit to unhide the feature. There's an option for the system to find what it thinks are the safest settings, but overclock at your own risk. Search the PCWorld site for the details on unhiding this feature.

Yes, I have installed a Zalman VF700-CU fan on my Dell 6800 GTO.  The only 'issue' I had was that I no longer could use the video card bracket clamp (which helps hold the card in place) due to the bracket on the Zalman.   I meant to write up my experience. installed the zalman vf700, amazing performance and unbelievable temps   oc'ed my card from 325/600 to 350/760... gpu load temp is 54C and idle temp is 43C
