Graphic Card Help Please
I made a BIG boo boo. I switched my monitor from one computer to another without turning anything off. Now no monitor will work on my system Dimension 3000. I guess I need to get a graphic card to make it work now. I know nothing about this stuff. Could someone please tell me a good card that will work on my system. I don't do any gaming, and very little video editing. I don't want to spend much on this because I will be buying a new system in the next few months but I still need this system. Also I need a card that available here on Dell. Thanks .

It is extremely unlikely that you damaged your video chip by unplugging the monitor. As an electrical engineer, I'm not even sure how you could do that. Now maybe it was just a weird coincidence, and it happened to break spontaneously at the same time, but that also seems extremely unlikely. It looks like your computer has integrated graphics. If your monitor has multiple inputs, have you tried making sure that it is on the right input (i.e. the one plugged into the computer)? The only expansion slots you appear to have are original PCI (not PCI Express or AGP). If your video is somehow broken (but the rest of your motherboard isn't, which would also be unusual), you could buy a card like this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/Graphics_Cards/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&sku=A0500040

I concur. I have disconnected and reconnected monitors on live systems at least a couple of hundred times without issue.
Do you have more than one connector for your monitor on the back of your computer? If so, it may mean that you have an add-on graphics card in your system and you are connecting it to the motherboard graphics. The motherboard graphics is automatically disabled when an add-on graphics card is present. Just connect your monitor to the other connector.
The only other thing that I can think of, is that you have an add-on graphics card that was not properly screwed down. If so, moving the monitor may have caused the graphics card to pop out of the slot (most likely causing damage to the card, motherboard or both).

Thanks for the replies. I do have on board hookup for the monitor. I do not have a second place to connect the monitor. The system is just like it came from dell. Only thing I added when I bought it was wireless keyboard and mouse. As far as I can tell (which isn't very far without a monitor) the motherboard seems to be fine aside from the monitor problem. I have tried two monitors and no luck with either and yes they both work on other computers so I will try the graphics card and I thank you for the help. I would not have known which one to get. Thanks again.

Looks like you were right. I got a graphic card and tried it but it didn't help at all. Looks like the motherboard fried. Luckily I have another dimension 3000 that I can switch everything over to. If this one will hold out for a few months for me I will probably get a new computer by then. Thanks again for the help.
