GX1 Power problems

Hi,
 
While I was working on my Optiplex GX1 P3 500 low profile, it just shut off all by itself and now won't power on anymore.
 
No green lights, no fan spinning when the power cord is plugged in, no nothing. Just dead.
 
I removed and opened the power supply and checked the fuse (underneath the fan) with an ohmmeter. It checks out. No other signs of trouble (smell of smoke, black smudges, etc.)
 
I replaced the power supply with another one. Still won't power on.
 
I tried the suggestion here:
 
Still won't power on.
 
Any ideas?

Remove all external cables. That includes LAN and Keyboard.

Remove the power supply.

Plug in only the 20 pin connector.

Try to power on.

Then remove the power cable.

Hook the 5 pin.

Put the power cable in.

Power on.

Still nothing.

Congratulations your power supply is DEAD and needs to be replaced.

The GX1 PSU is a 9228C proprietary PSU pinout.

'cause, as I said, I already saw this:
and it didn't work. So there's no point in posting the same thing again.
 
I also said "I replaced the power supply with another one. Still won't power on."
 
Any other ideas?

The GX1 DOES NOT USE a STANDARD power Supply.

Its also possible that the ON button is hozed. Its rare but that happens.

The pinouts are TOTALLY DIFFERENT for a GX1 power supply from a
"standard ATX"

So if you tried a regular power supply then you FRIED your CPU and mobo
because it puts 12v onto the 3.3v section of the motherboard when you
plug in the AUX connector that has 5 pins on it from an ATX power supply.

I used another Optiplex power supply. I know about non-standard Dell power supplies, thank you.

I was thinking about the possibility of the power button being bad. I have another optiplex that I can use for parts. I might try that.

But before I do, is there a way to prove whether or not the power supply is good independent of the motherboard? Like looking for voltages on certain pins in the connector?

And I'm curious how you came up with the "unplug the 5 pin connector" approach...

Answers to secret questions cost $3500.

Dumb looks are still free.

Hint All Atx power supplies have a 5vsb Standby power.

Hint #2 Dell uses blue with Grey stripes for the 3.3v and generally doesnt use standard wire colors. 5v is usually Red and 12v is usually yellow and Ground is usually black.

Shorting 2 wires together on the 20 pin connector forces power on.

Aka thats how you make an ATX to AT converter.
This is THE ATX STANDARD output not the Dell pinout.

There's also a 5v source that stays live when the power is off (purple wire) but output is very low and the power varies with each model of power supply.
FYI, you can power up an ATX P.S. by shorting the green wire with any black ground wire. As you know, the ATX P.S. will not turn on normally without a motherboard connected to it. There are times when you may want to test an ATX P.S. or use the voltage from one but don't really want to hook up a motherboard. There's only one green wire and there are plenty of ground wires so it's easy to do. To use a bent paper clip and insert one end in the green wire connector and bend it around and put it into a black wire connector.
