Handspring Visor and USB connection

The handspring Visor I purchased comes with a USB connector. Why does my computer only allow me to sync with Outlook 2000 using a Serial port connector?

Make sure USB is enable in the BIOS. Otherwise check your settings in the sync software in your Handspring.

You could always sell it and get a REAL Pocket PC that runs Windows. ;o)

A card reader such as SanDisk will solve a synch problem because you may access the card just as you would another disk drive. The reader will also read cameras and MP3 players.

It also depends on which Windows version you are using. USB Hotsync only works with Windows 98 and above, and 2000.

Presumably, you have bought the Serial cradle as well as the bundled USB cradle. Also, check the following:
1. Select only Local USB under Hotsync Manager.
2. Disconnect any Iomega USB ZIP drives that you have connected.

I want to be able to use my USB cradle with Outlook 2000, not invest in a serial port cradle. I have a very simple config with no zip drive. How can I make the USB port support my Visor and Outlook?

Install the USB driver from your software provided by HandSpring. Once it is installed, download your files, putting them into a new folder or the folder provided by HandSpring so they can be found easily. Open the folder from Outlook by clicking new in files, and browse to your folder. After that Outlook may automatically find the new files. You also may be given alternatives within the Handspring software as to where you would like its files to be exported. Go here for Handspring support.

I have spent hrs on the phone with handspring cust. support. Their solution was to suggest a serial port. I just want it to work thru USB. Is there anyone out there that uses Mindspring with Outlook 2000 thru USB.

Quincey, I already suggested a card reader which has a USB connection, and being an external disk drive will connect with any program you desire.

Where can I obtain a card reader for free?

Mindspring? You mean Handspring?

Yes, it does work. I've installed my Visor Deluxe and its USB cradle on a few machines, and they all work fine - even on an old Packard Bell Pentium 133 with an addon USB card and Windows 98.

On which Windows version is your machine running?

At last, a possible solution. Windows 98, Outlook 2000. Demension XPS D266. Two USB ports avail. Neither works. If changes to config are required I will need step by step instructions. Thank you.

Best Buys... $31 for a SanDisk reader. Make sure the card fits the reader. I don't recommend free. Best Buys can get sticky about things like that. However a card reader will play your MP3 files and photo files as well.

Just press the delete key when the computer starts to boot and you will enter the setup screen.

So what you are saying is that my options are limited. I guess I would like to know why, in fact, my USB connector will not work as is. For $30. I can get a Serial Port Cradle. Better option I think.

Take a look at the troubleshooter link I sent you. You may have something simple amiss like the USB drivers not being enabled. I needed to turn them on before they worked on my computer by going to the setup screen. The troubleshooter tells how to do this. "Nothing is hopeless. However problems prove their worth by being difficult to solve." You will want to fix your USB ports anyway. They are too useful.
