Hard drive bracket bay?

Question

I found out that in my Dell Dimension 2400, there is one hard drive bay so I cannot add another additional hard drive at all. :( Is there hard drive bracket that I can find for cheap prices but compatability to Dimension 2400?

I currently have IDE 80GB HDD that came with the desktop when I bought it from Dell.com.

How about the type of IDE cable that have master & slave and board plug?

The hard drive bracket needed for the D-2400, can be purchased for $7.99 from here and a three connector, 80 wire, 18" IDE cable similar to this is needed.

There are no instructions for installing a second IDE/EIDE hard drive in a D-2400, but as the D-4600 has the same case and chassis, you can use the D-4600 instructions for the physical installation.

Set the second hard drive's jumpers to "Cable Select" and connect it to the middle connector on the cable.

How to install the hard drive.

After installing the drive, enter the setup and check that the hard drive is set to Auto [on]. To enter the setup, tap the F2 key after a restart of the computer.

Use XP's disk management to partition and format the drive.

I have SP2 now and can install SP3 from Microsoft website....

As for bracket, that bracket part, can it be attached to another hard drive? Is that right?

Now, my HDD is 160 GB, it still shows 149 GB... how do I make it show 160 instead of 149 GB?

The bracket can be used for any second 3.5" hard drive, in Dimension 2300, 2350, 2400, 3000, 4600, and 4700. OptiPlex 160L, 170L, and 170LN systems.

A 160gb hard drive will only show 149.01gb in windows, because you have the binary and decimal capacity factor that applies to all hard drives.

instead of getting the bracket , cable and a hard drive what i'd say is that you can go for an external hard drive as you have 6 USB 2.0 ports i'm sure you can spare one for the ext hard drive and moreover an ext hard drive will give you additional features such as data back up and portability. . .

Thanks... I came up with clever way using very long IDE cable to do the switching the HDD until I get a bracket bay so I can add 2nd HDD later. :emotion-15:

The question is does my D-2400's BIO can recognize larger than 137 GB where it will display 160 GB on C:/ drive???

Yes, providing that you have XP SP1, or higher.

Hello deafcheer, The size of the 160 GB hard drive will show as approximately 149 GBs due to the way Windows reads the drive and partitioning and formating of the drive. This is normal.
