headset with microphone

Question

I recently bought a new Dimension 8400 with wonderful Dell 5650 5.1 speakers but between the 6 components they do not have headphone and mic jacks (or at least that I have found so far).  I can plug the headphone into the jack in the front of the tower, but to get the mic plugged in I have to crawl behind the tower and plug it in to the back.  My question is: if I plug the headphone AND the mic into the back of the tower, how do I control an on and off so I can toggle back and forth between the speakers and the headphone/mic in the quickest and easiest fashion?

What most people do is buy an (audio) extension cable for the microphone.  That way you can have the microphone connection in front.  You need to use the front panel headphone jack so you mute the speakers.

As it was said before, you can use the front headphone jack to mute the speakers and use an extender cable for the mic.

You won't have to unplug the mic, just the headphones.

Or you could look into a USB headset.
