Help! -- I've lost my multimedia audio controller and video controller

Question

(I have a Dell Dimension 2350 and it's Windows XP, service pack 2, version 2002)   Hello, I was trying to get my computer to work faster so I uninstalled various things that it said I don't use much. Like a fool, I cleaned out the recycle bin afterwards.  When I restarted the computer I had no sound at all.  The 'Found New Hardware Wizard' was telling me it could help me install software for Video Controller, Video Controller (VGA compatible) and Multimedia Audio Controller.  However, when I followed its instructions, including by inserting the CD's I got when I purchased the computer, it tells me 'Hardware was not installed because the wizart cannot find the necessary software.'   When I go to System Properties -- Hardware, there are disconcerting yellow question marks next to Other Devices, and next to Multimedia Audio Controller, Video Controller, and Video Controller (VGA compatible) A friend of mine said I could take out and then replace the video card.  Can anyone out there please tell me if that will work, and if not, what can I do? Chris

Was there a CD that came with your computer specific to AUDIO? Usually all you need to do is just reinstall from the CD ... You may be able to find it on the internet by googling MULTIMEDIA CONTROLLER, etc.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I've tried the CD's that came with the computer.  There's one that says 'multimedia software' which is supposed to have the audio.  But it doesn't work.  I've tried it many times using the wizard.  I don't know if it's a fault with the CD or if I'm doing something wrong.  I will try doing a search. I appreciate the help.

You wouldn't use the wizard to install it. You should go into device manager, and remove the item next to audio devices (it should have a yellow exclamation mark next to it). Then put the cd in the drive and it should execute to install a program which would include the drivers. When that's done and you reboot, it should no longer indicate that it found new hardware for the multimedia. At least that's what I suspect.

Thanks very much to everyone.  I did uninstall the audio with the yellow question mark next to it and I used the CD and it all worked out and I have SOUND again!

Hello,   The same thing has happened to me (uninstalled a lot of things and now I have no sound). I went into the device manager and uninstalled the Media Audio Controller, but what do I do if I don't have the CD that came with the computer?
