Help with icons

Question

New to the forum so i hope someone can help me...I have a 4500s and I cannot get into most of my icons(the only one I can get into is AOL...When i click on  the icons that are there they all go away(even my toolbar)..I can't even get into my recycle bin..Sometimes when i am online the toolbar goes away too...What do you think my problem is???

Housecall found 2 trojans.I do have Mcafee Internet Security  installed in my computer but had problems getting the activeshield to stay working..Do you recomend Mcafee or the Trendmicro for my Dell?

I recommend any antivirus software that is continuously running and kept up to date with new virus definitions.  If it's not running and not kept up to date, you can count on being infected. Steve

I rescanned my computer and it said i had 5 trojans..They are now deleted..I still cant get into my icons and some files to delete my Mcafee.I can't still get into my recycle bin..I need to reinstall my virusscan..Did those trojans damage my computer?? Is that why ii isnt working right..What do I need to do?

If I download and run that virus scanner (housecall), will it cause my current virus scanner software to run improperly? I am currently using the free version of AVG 6.0.

You should have no problem running Housecall with AVG installed. I've never had, nor heard of, any conflicts with Housecall and any othes Virus scanner. I too run AVG on some of my machines.

Housecall found 5 trogans on my computer...does anyone know if trogans can damage your computer or is it just virus's?

Let 'House call' remove everything it finds. Then re-scan and let it remove anything it finds again. Trojans do not harm your computer per se, but they definitely can effect the way your computer works... Always... repeat... 'ALWAYS' negatively. Can you get to control panel and remove McAfee? IMHO that would be a good first start.

Then download, install, update, and run adaware > http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

Then download, install, update, and run SpyBot Search and Destroy > http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

Remove anything either program finds.

At this point in time there seems to be a major power play in the forum that would be the most help to you, so I can not in good conscience recommend you posting there. Try the above and post back. There are a lot of pretty good 'normal' people here in this conference that are willing to try to help without having to be a 'superhero'

Well I went to those sites and did both..The housecall wouldn't let me delete 1 trojan cause it says its in use...and the adware came up with a lot of potential things to quarentine.it was like 450 of them...was i supposed to quarentine them all?..i can get to my control panel but there's still alot of places i cant go to get rid of my mcafee virusscan..i can't even get into my recycle bin..When i try to get in to them my toolbar goes away and all my icons...Seems strange to me!!!But then there is some things i can get in to..

Pam

No need to quarantine them, click finish and then 'yes' when prompted, you want to delete them. If you have already quarantined them you can still delete them.
Then do the same thing with Spybot.
Your on the right path and making good progress. Make sure you check for updates after you install so you have the current files.

I finally got rid of all those things that i quaranteened and now everything is working great..I can finally get into everything that i couldn't before..Now my problem is I can't defragment my computer..I want to do that before i reinstall my Mcafee Internet Security.When  I click on it , it comes up all kinds of words and letters..Do you think it might have come from deleteing all the Mcafee items they told me to do on the computer? I rescanned everything and everything is clear..I think I'm finally getting close to my computer working great..Thanx

Anything is possible... especially with Macafee, but I doubt it. I am assuming you rebooted before you tried to defrag. If not do so. If no good, try booting into safe mode and trying. It sounds like you may still have a critter or two hanging around. Post back with system specs please. You're getting closer...

My problem before with Mcafee was they said i was in safe mode which I don't know how to tell if I am..I rebooted the system and I still get the same page when i try to defragment....At the top of the page it says Windows/system32..I don't know what you want to know about my computer..I can tell you i have windows xp..
