Yes it did work one time. But I have teenagers that like to jack around with things to play THEIR music. Windows XP....MMM the status of the sound in the Device Manager, forgive me, I'm a musician. Do not know what you are talking about or where to look.
I am a musician and have a home computer based recording studio.
You can try the "System Restore" function if it hasn't been too long and that MAY get you going. System Restore can be accessed from Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools. Select a restore date when it did work.
If not, the BLUE link in my original post is to a Microsoft "fixit" that MAY work.
Otherwise, I would suggest taking it to a computer repair center and get it working. It will cost you $$ but from your response it may be the best thing to do.
HERE are the Dell driver downloads for the E310 and Windows XP. You can download both the Intel motherboard chipset drivers and the SigmaTel sound drivers. Install the Intel chipset drivers, restart the PC and after Windows starts install the SigmaTel sound drivers.
DO NOT use the Dell Download Manager. Download each driver individually.
No, once it's downloaded you must run the installation program. The Downloads have detailed instructions (on the download page) for installing drivers.
For example, on a sound driver this is what Dell lists:
Hard Drive Installation (via WinZip) with Setup.exe File for R114282.EXE
Download
1.Click Download Now, to download the file. 2.When the File Download window appears, click Save (Windows XP users will click Save) this program to disk and click OK. The Save In: window appears. 3.From the Save In: field, click the down arrow then click to select Desktop and click Save. The file will download to your desktop. 4.If the Download Complete window appears, click Close. The file icon appears on your desktop.
Install
1.Double-click the new icon on the desktop labeled R114282.EXE. 2.The Self-Extracting window appears and prompts you to extract or unzip to C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R114282. Write down this path so the executable (I.e. Setup.exe) file can be found later. 3.The Self-Extractor window appears. 4.Click OK. 5.After completing the file extraction, if the Self-Extractor window is still open, close it. 6.Click the Start button and then click Run. 7.Type C:\DELL\DRIVERS\R114282 in the Open textbox and then click OK. 8.Follow the on-screen installation instructions.
I think I've done everything I was asked to do. I'm having NO success. Technical support will cost me (I assume) since I'm out of warrenty. If I pay them one prcie of $45.00 will they diagnose my sound DVD/and CD issues.

I assume it worked at one time. What happened to cause the loss of sound? Did you install something? Uninstall something?
HERE is a Microsoft fixit, you can try that and see if it will help.
If that does not work or help, we will need your Operating System (e.g. Windows XP, Vista, Win 7) and the status of the sound in the Device Manager.

When you say, "no cd or dvd usage at all", do you mean it won't play audio or that the drive doesn't read the CD/DVD?
Have you reinstalled our Chipset and Audio drivers for your PC model and operating system?
