How many work?

This is a two part question. I would like to replace my Dell 266 with a new Dell 8200. After reading the posts here and on ePinions etc: I am terrified that I will get a major headache. My questions are: Firdt, how many people get machines that work perfectly (I know only Dell knows the real numbers but perhaps someone out there can provide realistic feedback). Secondly, if there are so many problems with machines not working, and with tech support, why have the major computer magazines not reported it? Thank you for your input and heaven help us all.

The vast majority of people don't have any problems. You see the ones that do here. I have many friends that have Dell systems and I have never had any complain of problems.

Hi images,
I was told that only 5% of all Dell customers ever call Tech..
I go along with the last poster, the vast majority never have problems. Any problem I have ever had Dell resolved to my satisfaction. You have 30 days to return your system for a full refund, if you have a major problem do not keep it. Return it or have it replaced. Do not email your problems to Dell, call them. It takes time, but Dell is a large Corp, things take time. You may have problems with any computer you buy, but I feel Dell is the best.

My 2 cents, hope it helps,

I bought a Dim 8100 and a Dim 8200 in the past 6 months and I am very satisfied with both PCs.

But PLEASE don not count on Dell for service!!!!
They are trained in torturing you to death.

The only exception has been Cathy :)))))))

Hi

It's 30 Days from the date of the Invioce to return the computer, not when the buyer recieves it, and ditto on the software, which after the 30 days you will be charged for phone advice by the Techies.

IMO, what you see here are problems with components. So, it's not necessarily Dell that's the problem, but a vendor that is supplying them with a faulty fan, for example. Or a monitor that's on back-order. Also, Win XP is a new and there are bound to be problems. Also, a lot of older peripherals are not compatible and drivers may not be yet be available for Win XP. What you see, mainly, are questions about things like that. Also, it's easier to come here and post since many times people don't know how the problem originated.

I bought my 4400 on line right after Christmas and have not had any hardware problems. Other than some problems with settings and such, I'm pleased with what I purchased. I agree though, it's probably better to order by speaking directly with a representative.

Remeber these forums are for people who have "problems" thus if you consider that Dell was the only computer manufacture to see an increase in sales last year, then the number of problems is probably quite low. I have an XPT550 that I got back in Sept. 1999 and have no problems with it at all. I just got an 8200 with a 2.2Ghz and got it with everything, and it came exactly the way I ordered it and have no problems with it at all. Knock on Wood. The 8200 I ordered online without ever talking to anybody. I've heard this is more "risky" than talking to a salesperson. I would go ahead and order a Dell without worry. Good Luck.

Hi,
The system you'll see in my posting at the end is a refurb and when I received it the paperwork indicated the CDRW had been replaced. I have had a few problems but none have resulted in a call to Dell support but they have been problems folks have posted here as if they were a life threat. I have been somewhat amused by the way some folks act since I have been involved with PC's for 15 years and back then unless you read and dug and made mistakes and kept a journal and shared the information with others there really wasn't a lot out there to assist you. There were 750 systems purchased from Dell for where I work and the failures so far have been this:

1 system arrived DOA

2 Monitors arrived DOA

4 memory modules have failed

3 Hard Drives have failed

3 floppy drives have failed

1 NIC card has failed

1 video card has failed

I don't think that any company could do much better considering shipping 750 systems to have the above problems.

After seeing the quality of what we received I decided to purchase a Dell for my own use and this is the first PC I have purchased pre-made since my involvement with them and all the others have been of my own hands. The Forum is a wonderful place to ask things but I am so surprised the more folks don't spend a few minutes looking at what is there already before posting their panic. I have no problem helping anyone but it is silly for folks to have a problem and immediately place the blame on a company or the hardware or whatever when it becomes painfully obvious they haven't even cracked the book that accompanied the system or even reviewed any of the Forums postings or FAQs. I have been very pleased with what I got and hope to be for quite awhile. Regards......
