How to use card reader on 521

Howdie all,
I've just received my new 521.  So far fairly happy with it.
However I can't seem to get the card reader to work.
I'm a computer techie myself so instantly removed all preinstalled
software when I got the machine.  I'm wondering if one
of these was required for the card reader.
 
Placing a card into the reader does not make it appear in
explorer.
 
The system also keeps complaining that a USB device has malfunctioned
however at present only 2 USB devices are plugged in
the supplied keyboard, and mouse, both of which are working fine.
 
Any thoughts appreciated.

The usb device that's malfunctioning would be the card reader... it uses an internal usb slot. There's no special software for card readers, you should be able to just insert a card and have it work.

Sounds like the reader may be faulty.

One thing you can try is to open the case an unplug the card reader from the motherboard and plug it back in (you can do it with the power on because it is a USB device ... but be careful not to short anything out with your watch or jewelry, etc). My card readers have done the same thing periodically and that is all it took to get them working again. I'm not sure what is wrong with them.

I get the feeling the connection wasn't in properly.

That's what I thought and I got Dell to send a new connector, but now I feel there is something wrong with the card reader. I have two and both have had the same problem as yours. I tried just wiggling the connector and that did not help. I needed to pull it off and put it back.

Maybe you should report it to tech support if you are under warranty. If they hear enough complaints maybe they will fix it.

Mine has been working for some time. I can't figure out what makes it fail. It is annoying that I have to open the case to fix it. With an external card reader it would be much simpler to pull the plug.

Yeh you're right again.  As soon as I restarted the machine it stopped working :-(
Do Dell read these forums?
