HP officejet printers' compatibility with Dell
I have an HP Officejet 500 printer/fax/copier/scanner, and my Dell Dimension 2350 with Windows XP is unable to communicate with my printer. I installed the updated XP driver from HP, but the HP website says that Dell computers are not compatible with HP printers. They suggested a solution, but it didn't work. Is there anything I can do to get my computer to communicate with my printer?
Thanks,
Maren

If you downloaded the driver from this site, you should be able to use your OfficeJet with a Dell XP computer, if you followed the installation procedure properly -
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareList.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&prodId=oj500&lc=en&plc=&softitem=Microsoft%20Windows%20XP&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software
I doubt your statement that HP printer are not compoatible with Dell computers. I have two HP printers now connectee to my Dell and have never had a minutes problems.
If you can define the problem you are having, one of us should be able to help you. Communications probelms are always, cable, connection, or computer port related. Have you changed the port configuration to EPP?

When I print from Word, Mozilla, and Notepad, I get this error: "Printer Error, THe computer has lost communication with the printer. Cancel printing, turn the printer off, then back on. Try printing again." When I do this, a page with a single line of gibberish prints out.
When I check the status of the printer, it says: "HP OfficeJet Disconnected!"
I have tried to run the manager by configuring the port to EPP and then to ECP, and I got the same messages both times.

My suggestion. Uninstall and then reinstall the software. Here are instructions -
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/softwareDownloadIndex.jhtml?reg=&cc=us&softitem=oj539en&prodId=oj500&lc=en&plc=&sw_lang=en&pagetype=software
When you reinstall be sure to follow instructions exactly. Some instructions call for installing the software BEFORE connecting the printer/scanner.

Got a similar problem with my OfficeJet G55 and Dell Dimension 4100 after upgrading to Windows XP.
Found docs at HP:
http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bpu01862#P98_14078
Following steps from "If System Restore causes Plug and Play to fail in Windows XP" resolved the problem of the printer7copier7scanner not being automatically recognized after HP software installation.
Hope this helps.

Go into bios and change the printer setting to EPP and reboot.
