Hyperthreading on 3.0 GHz Processor
Hi,
I recently purchksed a Dell Dimension 8300 with a 3.0 GHz with Hyperthreading. Though this may seem slightly naive, I was wondering why I didn't recieve a P4 HT sticker on my desktop. I just got a regular P4 sticker. Just wondering....

You proably just got an old sticker when they ran out of the new ones. Somtimes dell ships cases that have an older model stickers on them but they are the newer system you ordered. Its just a cosmetic thing.

BTW, I was thinking about ordering that exact same Dell system. Other than the sticker thing, how have you liked it so far? Is it as fast as you had hoped?

If you want to be happy get rid of the Dell loaded software.
If you like the wallpaper that comes from Dell find it and copy it to disk.
That way you will still have it after the reload.
Good Luck.
P.S. you could be waiting a while for Dell to work this out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i have done many things to fix including latest logitec drivers and chipset from intel.
dell have been no help.
i also switched off fast boot in bios perhaps that solved it.
with hyperthreading ON the norton anti viris 2004 pro option to "load auto protect during system boot" "reccomended". is greyed out.
any ideas?

Or like bringing your 2002 BMW back to the dealer three times to have them fix the passenger door lock, and EACH time they claim they fixed it, but it's still broken. and oh wait, wrong message board, sorry

I also had trouble with my Dimension 8300 with Hyperthreading enabled with some applications. When using my Hauppauge WinTV card it would freeze after a few minutes of watching and I would have to ctrl+alt+del out of it as it stopped responding. Also sometimes just opening and closing applications stuttered sometimes with hyperthreading on. Turning it off in the BIOS and all was well. Sure, I love that my boot times are around 20 seconds from power on to desktop with HT on, but of course there has to be more to a fast system than that. I, of course, immediately reformatted after receiving the system to get rid of the extra stuff Dell loads. I am starting to believe this hyperthreading is all marketing hype and largely useless to most users. Plus, most hardware manufacturers still haven't released updates for their software to be compatible with hyperthreading (if it is the actual software that is the problem, and not hyperthreading), but I have my doubts on this point.
What does everyone else think about Hyper threading?? A marketing trap to get more $$$'s or is it actually useful?

I've read about it and it sounds neat but by the time my units are off the radar scope the P-5 will be here and HT will be a history item. The software people have had HT to work with for some time now and it just isn't that usefull. Having a CPU clipping along at 4 point something will beat the pants of the HT everyday. The software will move to that arena and there just will not be the bucks to develop anything new for HT.
If ya want a dualie then get one. I have my doubts about the virtual dual processor.
I do plan on taking my 8200 to the 3.06GHz (when the price drops of course) with HT.
I just dont think it will be that great. I have a 2.26GHz cpu now so the speed bump will be nice.
If the HT helps it will be great I'm not expectating it to be.

Grab a marker and put HT on the sticker so it'll make you a bit happier than worried about the sticker that came with your system.
