Inspiron 660 printer stops working
Having trouble with an Inspiron 660 Desktop.
Running along smoothly and unexpectedly my HP4320 printer stops printing. Open the printer properties and it's checked with Use Offline. I uncheck it and come back and it's checked again...sporadically.
Having trouble with usb ports. Some work sometimes. Some work never. More success with front usb connections than rear. I see some are USB 1.0 and some are US 2.0. The driver offered from 'Dell: the Mysterious and Scarce' is USB 3.0.
What is the SM Controller and how can I get a driver for it?
Chipset drivers are confusing as to which are needed. (Why would I need Vostro driver for this Service Tag?)
Why are my USB ports changing?
Is there any software that can check these ports?
Will Dell ever take the mystery out of computing? (I have less trouble with my Alienware M17r2, and these guys are in Costa Rica.) Very poor online information.

Hi Dynan3,
Sorry to hear about the inconvenience you are facing with your Dell computer.
Please click on the link below for Instructions on how to use the Dell Drivers and Downloads Website. It also has information on system drivers and their relevance and how to install instructions.
http://dell.to/YyKehR
Once you have checked the information available on that link, please click on the link below for drivers for your Dell Inspiron 660. Select the correct operating system prior to downloading and installing the drivers.

In addition, you can also check the link below for your query related to your HP printer going offline.

Hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if further help is needed.

Thank you for your timely reply.
This solution addresses an NETWORK printer. My printer is usb connected directly to my computer.
Also, this happens with two printers I have...an HP and a Canon, so it is not a printer problem.
Is there any way to check the status of, diagnose or test the usb ports. All are listed as perfectly functioning in the Device Manager. And yet, I constantly see the printer has been switched to OFFLINE. This happens constantly, but not every time. If I connect the printer to a usb port on the front of the computer, it operates, but this is an unusable solution for long term. Why are the usb ports fluctuating?
I ask respectfully, but do you think I don't know how to update drivers? What about when the device with the warning sign has no driver listed? (SM CONTROLLER) How about identifying the chipset in my computer when there is a list of 4 drivers in the download section...which do I use?
The component tab under my service tag number is a totally abbreviated, incomprehensible, and incomplete list that has no links to information or drivers. This has been this way for 12+ years that I have owned a Dell computer. On the linked page http://dell.to/12tl5SP, the Top Solutions have nothing to do with my problem. no diagnostics explain why my printer is just suddenly disconnected from the usb port it is attached to, when it was working earlier. This happens with two printers...a Canon and an HP, so it is not a printer problem.

And another small suggestion... There should be an ability to edit these posts since so much vital and technical is being posted that clarity is of the essence. Any typos should be correctable.

Hi Dynan3,
Thank you for your reply. We value your feedback and will attempt to do our best to answer your queries and try to resolve the issue for you.
For running diagnostics on your Dell, click on the link below for running PC Diagnostics on your Dell computer. You can either run the full system diagnostics or select USB under Component and run diagnostics on the same.
For PC Diagnostics: http://dell.to/16PMjJm
For your query regarding SMBus, this is the System Management Bus used in personal computers and servers for low-speed, system management communications. A SMBus controller is integrated into most Intel chipsets. Whenever the Device Manager displays a yellow question mark for the SMBus controller or lists it under Other Devices, we need to download and run the Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility/Driver so Windows properly recognizes the SMBus controller.
For Chipset drivers : http://dell.to/12tl5SP
On the Drivers & Downloads page, under Chipset, there are four drivers listed, however, two of them clearly state Intel Chipset Drivers. Their release dates and versions are similar so you can select either of them and install on your computer. Once installed, reboot the system.
Hope this resolves the issue for you. Let me know if further help is needed.
Thanks and regards,
Babita S

The edit button is that little green pencil in your posts. Click on it to make corrections. I agree that showing he word EDIT would be better.
