a "bump" is just a post to bring back the msg to the top of the board list where it will be seen by more people as opposed to sitting on the later pages.
Sorry I can't help your problem. After a format/reinstall of all drivers I'm out of ideas on that one.
Can anyone else tell me what to do about this "Code 12?" How do I switch the COntroller's resources when it is not even using any? I'd have to enable its usage of resources rather than switch them. :(
Allow me a moment to bask in teh glory of normal scrolling refresh rates - I have not seen such a thing in three months. :wets his pants: I loooooovvveee it.
Okay. This is what I did. I realise that in my Device Manager I have no Display Devices. So, naturally, I'm like, "What the heck?" After all these months of crazy experiments, what else do I do but go into good ol' Control Panel > Display > Settings > Adapter. And what do I see? VgaSave..Nothing new, I've seen it there before.
But wait - there is a tiny drop-down box at the bottom that has some choices in it, including System and Automatic. Hmm...In DirectX Diagnostics, it showed that I was usng the driver vga.dll...Sounds like a "System" driver to me. So was this System in the CP just a coincidence? I think not.
So what else do I do but switch it from System to Automatic, having no idea that Automatic would then lead to the detection of my video card and from there on eternal bliss! :)
I apologise for the over-the-top drama, but this is so great. A great burden has been liften from my shoulders. How VgaSave came to create its own totalitarian VGA government on my PC, I have no idea - but it is over.
Thank you all for your help anyway - and no thanks at all to the on-line and telephone techs at Dell, who have been out-troubleshooted by me, a relatively inexperienced newb in computers.

You can now proudly jump up a notch and loose your "newb" title. We've all been there at one time or another (having dealt with the frustrations of online or phone tech support. Makes you want to call them back and tell them how you really solved the problem, doesn't it.
Appreciate the fact that you took the time to post your results, so that it may help others in the same predicament.

Here is something to try. Open the case and remove cards except the video card. Power on. Do you still have the same Code 12?
