Go to Windows Update and update Internet Explorer to version 6. This is the latest version and the update should repair any problems you had with previous versions.
been there, done that. You have to be able to download from the site when upgading, and I was unable to do that, even though I can get online it pops up a window that can't access the site.
When you reinstalled Windows ME did you install over the existing Windows ME or did you reformat your drive and reinstall?
If you go to Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, are you sure Internet Explorer is not in the list - it is usually listed as Microsoft Internet Explorer. If it is in the Add/Remove list under M, then click on Remove and it will give you the option to repair Internet Explorer.
If none of these options work, then you will either have to reformat and reinstall Windows ME, get Microsoft to send you version 6 of Intenet Explorer om CD (cost ~$10 for shipping and handling), or find another computer on which you can download the full installation of Internet Exploration, copy it to a CD ROM and then install it on your computer.
If you had upgraded to a newer version of Internet Explorer, before you you did the reinstallation of Windows ME, then this would explain why Internet Explorer no longer works, as the reinstallation would have put on an older version of IE. Formatting and reinstallation of Windows is not an easy task, and if you've never done it before, it can be confusing. That is why most of us recommend that you get Dell Tech Support to walk you through it. Reformatting your hard drive will erase everything on the drive. So, it is essential to back up all of the critical information on your drive - things like documents, e-mail, photos, downloaded music files, speadsheets, etc. i.e. anything that you have created and stored on your drive.
I think it would be best to try to obtain a newer copy of IE to install, as I suggested in my last reply, but if you want to format and reinstall, the instructions for formatting are at:
I installed windows ME over the existing one. Not exactly sure of the process to do a full restore on this comp. Could use some help. I really don't want to contact the folks at Dell, the last time I had a problem it took about 4 people to fix it, and not to mention my warranty is up....of course!!
I wonder if he could get by by installing an older separate version of IE first, then getting on line. I seem to recall that my Works 2000 set included an option for installing IE 5.0. Some other programs that come on CD might include IE too. It's worth a look. TurboTax 2001 contains IE 5.5.
