Is it a Socket 478 or 423?

Question

What system board is the Dimension 8100? Is it a Socket 478 or 423? Dell Tech Support tells me it's a 478, but everything I've found tells me it's a 423. Also, where can I go to find a Pentium 4 2.0 upgrade kit for my 1.7? Thanks

The 8100 is socket 423. To find the P4 2.0 Ghz 423 pin CPU try the following:

You will need to make sure that you have at least BIOS version A09 to go to 2.0 Ghz. I'm not sure that performance gain/price index will be very favorable for this upgrade at the present prices though.

The best things about faster CPU's is what you don't see. I do a lot of video editing. On my old P4 1.3, I'd get around 20-25 FPS. My P4 2.4 does 50 FPS.

In general use terms, I cannot see any difference between the 1.3 and 2.4. It doesn't boot really any faster. Programs don't open any faster.
