95.00 GBP (that is alot of money, have you shopped around or are you buying from Dell?) is alot to spend on a memory upgrade that will give you a very negligible performance increase. I would recommend that you put the money in a new computer fund that will buy you a whole new system for less than you probably paid for your original Dell. Good Luck in whatever you decide to do.

Your Dimension 8300 is pretty outdated going by current computer standards. The cpu is a single core in a world of quads and soon to be six core cpu's. The ram is ddr which is now three generations old thus the high purchase price. Also your graphics port is agp which hasn't been used in around 5 years. If your current computer meets your needs then spend no more money on it because the performance increase will not be justified by the cost. If you truly desire more performance then look into buying a newer system. The prices of new systems are really quite low when compared to what you would have originally paid for your current system. Really appreciate your thoughts, a PC fund sounds like a good idea? I have had no problems with the 8300 ( apart from viruses my fault!!) which current model would you suggest?

Personally, the Studio XPS 8100 or XPS 9000 would be my suggestions. Check the Dell Outlet store first for deals on refurbished systems. I own 2 refurbished system with another on order. I haven't had any issues with refurbished desktops.

Hi All, 1st time post so excuse any newbie stuff.  I have a Dimension 8300 ( from New) had it about 5 years at least. It is running XP Pro with 4 x 256mb pc3200 memory units. I am currently looking at sourcing 2 x 1gb and 2 x 512 mb chips taking me to 3GB ( I believe that the most memory XP can utilise is 3.5Gb) This change is going to cost in the region of £95.00 GBP do you think it is worth it? The machine is heavily used for family browsing, I do some very light office type stuff, and a bit of desktop publishing ( mostly to scan and file household bills) I suppose I am looking to justify this amout of money on a reliable machine of this age....Appreciate your thoughts

No, 1gb of RAM, with an decent AGP video card should fine to run XP, you are better off putting the £95.00 towards buying a new system.  :emotion-5:

I disagree - go ahead and upgrade the RAM.  Especially for video,  need more RAM - I say 2Gb is fine.

You could just buy (2) 1Gb sticks or (4) 512s- good quality on ebay-usa for  $30 to  $40 U.S.   Performance DDR400 RAM is going cheap; I just bought 2x1Gb Geil for $41 shipped.  Cannot mix with old RAM though - Dell will have a fit.

Now if you plan on buying Adobe CS4 for video processing, never mind.
