Keeping 5-Speaker Settings as default
Everytime i start up my dell xps 435, the speaker settings revert back to the 2.1 speaker default option.....i have a sound blaster titanium sound card and always have to manually set the speaker to 5 in the control panel (i have an optical out cable going into my receiver for 5.1 output). How can I set it so that it is fixed. Also all my drivers are updated, sound output is not a problem.

The "speaker" out (analog outputs) and the S/PDIF digital output are two separate functions. Are you setting the S/PDIF as the "default" for playback? My S/PDIF output can only be set to two channel (stereo). My "Speaker" output can be set to 5.1 (or 7.1).

Right now the speaker is set to default, when i choose the spdif out as default, no sound comes out. Isn't the optical out suppose to provide the 5.1?
All my selections as for the sound card are sent to spdif optical out, to run through receivers' speakers.

On most systems, the S/PDIF output is only 2 channel stereo. I'm on my way out but later today I'll check and see if I can find out any more info for you.

True, my old laptop which had a soundblaster pc card had only pcm 2 channel output, but also i can get 5.1 from my cable box...so the spdif can get this signal.
My receiver currently shows 5.1 dolby in the display-even though the spdif is not in 'default' mode.

Optical Out supports stereo SPDIF out, multichannel out via Dolby Digital Live, and pass through of multichannel DVD
Which I would take to mean stereo unless you have the Dolby Digital Live.
