Kingston Value Ram (KVR)

I have read here that the Kingston KVR Value ram will not work in a dell system, I didn't read that till after I had already ordered some on EBAY (NEW). I have not got it yet but I am wonder why Dell has the KVR Value Ram for sell on their site if it is not computable, Also I contacted Dell customer support before I ordered it and they said that it would in fact work in my Dell 4600.

So what's the deal is Dell wrong and the RAM will in fact not work in my 4600 or will I get it and will it work no problem?

Also I currently have 256mb ram and  ihave 2 empty slots can I add the other 2 ram chips in the empty slots and use them all together?

BTW here is the exact modules I ordered on Dells accesory page

It will work in some systems but it's hit and miss.  Dell's tend to be finnicky about memory - some brands will work, some will not work, some will work in some models.  Many of the "user experts" recommend Crucial as it is guaranteed to work in a Dell.  www.crucial.com

First, don't panic.  Value ram may work quite well in your computer.  I have three D2400's all of which are running with at least one module of Kingston value RAM.  Value RAM simply does not always have as tight a spec as the KTD product.  Some forum members have had trouble getting this to work, mostly on the older Dells.  If the product is on the way already you have nothing to lose by trying it.  For the future, however, I suggest you purchase value RAM only if you can easily return it should it not work.  Instead, use one of the major suppliers' memory configurator to choose and order the memory that they guarantee will work.

mombodog I ordered th pc2700 333mhz because thats what my 2 factory chips from dell are and  I plan on using thes new ones along with the old ones and if I had used 400mhz it would still only clock 333mhz becuase it will always clock at the speed of the lowest MHZ chip that is istalled I was told.

BTW did the valueram work ok with you 4600, and did it come right up after you installed it?

Installed some Kingston Value ram in my 4600, It was 400mhz memory, but the 4600 will only clock it at 333mhz.  :smileysad:

My 4600 is only a couple years old if that matters Dell says it will work but I wanted to make sure that someone has actaully used the value ram before  I open it because if I knew it wouldn't work I could resell it long as it wasn't opened, but it sounds like that sometimes the valueram works great so i will probably chance it.

BTW I ordered the same MHZ's as my old chips so maybe that will help.

No problems other than the clock back issue, I installed a 2gb kit, removed the old ram. Still bugs me that I cannot have the advertised 400mhz performance. I guess that is what you get with Value Ram.

Well I messed up I thought the 256mb ram  I have were 333mhz but come to find out its actually 400mhz.

So tell me whats gonna be faster

256mb pc3200 ram     or      512mb pc2700ram?

Also if I use them all together that will give me 768mb of ram but since the 256mb is pc3200 and the 512mb will be pc2700 will it still work together and just all run at pc2700 speed or will in not work together at all?

Your just going to have to try it to see for sure.If it works it will run at  pc2700 speed.

The speed that the memory runs at will also depend on what your processor's FSB (front side bus) speed is.   If your processor has an 800MHz FSB, then the memory can run at a max of 400MHz.  However, if your processor has only a 533MHz FSB, then the memory can only run at a max of 333MHz - therefore PC3200 (400MHz) memory would automatically downclock to run at the speed of PC2700 (333MHz).

I have one stick of KVR PC2700 which has been running great in my Dimension 2400 for years (I got lucky I guess).

Good news the new 512mb kit of the Kingston ValueRam works great but it will not work with the old 256mb of old ram so I had to take out the old 256mb of ram but plan on getting another 512mb kit of the Kingston valueram. When  I used the new ram along with the old ram and powered the PC up the screen was just showing white lines. I was really hoping  I could use them all together and have 768mb but for now the 512mb of pc2700 valueram is a lot faster than the old 256mb of pc3200 factory dell ram.

Anyone have any idea why the old and the new won't work together? Anyways I am still very happy with the performance of 512mb Kingston Valueram and have booted up several times and not had any problems and I think if it was gonna have problems it would of done showed up right?

Found the problem, my DIMM 4 slot was bad becuase one of the tiny prongs was bent down and i fixed it with a small pin by bending the prong back into the side like it was supposed to be, the sad part is that it was installed like that by dell because that slot has never been used so anyone who has a bad ram slot take a flashlight and look into the slot to make sure all the prongs are sitting upright into the side of the slot and not laying down.

I am now running 768mb RAM dual channel and  I must say compaired to my original 256mb, WOW.
