"line in" connection

What is the "line in" connection for located at the bottom of my computer. I have a telephone line that runs from the "line in" connection to a telephone jack.

In addition to the audio 'Line In' that Denny described, the port that connects your modem to the telco line is often labeled 'Line In' also. Next to that is typically a connector labeled 'Phone'. These are bothe RJ-11 sockets. The autio 'Line In' would be an RCA-type socket.

tedsun,

The Line In connection should be on your sound card and is designed to accept an input from the Line Out jacks of an amplifier, usually to play or record music. I have no idea why there is a connection to a telephone jack from there on your system.

I think you'll find that if you have a phone line running from the "line in" to a telephone jack, its actually a MODEM, not a SOUND CARD as suggested above. You'll probably have a "line in" and a "phone" connection next to it, both with the same plug. The modem is used to dial out to access, for example, the internet.

Thanks for the prompt replies. I believe what happened was that I converted from dial-up service to high speed cable a few years ago. The cable company installed the cable and did not disconnect the telephone cable that ran from the jack to the back of the CPU. I cancelled the telephone line when I got the high speed cable and never noticed the wire until recently as the jack was behind furniture. It seems that the telephone cable was was serving no purpose and should have been removed.  Thanks again.
