locking up when trying to restore

Question

Here is my problem. I am working on my sisterinlaws computer dell dimension 2400, it has xp on it and it keeps getting a blue screeen. I am trying to restore it to it's original point, just start all over from scatch. I am able use the cd to get to the restore screen and it will run up to the point where it is (examining 76294 mb disk 0 at id 0 on bus 0 atapi.....) and it stops. What now? I have tried everything i know.

first, edit you post and remove the service tag.

second, run 90-90 diags by pressing CNTL+ALT+D at the Dell spalsh screen.

Most likely the hard drive is failing.

Another thing to check on 2400s is under the green CPU shroud, see if the heat sink is loose due to the retainer breaking.

OK, tried control+alt+d, gave me a keyboard error. checked under the green schroud but have no idea what to look for. there is a square object with fins on it but it is not loose. also ran diagnostics and it said everything was fine, checked everything.

HAYNE.SMITH   The square deal with fins may not feel loose but may have popped on one side. This is a very common problem with the Dimension 2400.   There are two silver looking clips that hold heat sink (square deal with fins) firmly to the CPU. Both silver looking clips are visible once the green shroud is moved out of the way. Both clips must be firmly attached at each end to the black plastic piece.   The problems you experience sound much like those attributed to a misaligned heat sink.   MD

OK, removed the heat sink (metal thing with fins) there were two green plastic keepers holding it in place.  There was some kind of gray putty stuff on it, cleaned it off (probably wasn't supposed to).  Removed the chip, then re-installed every thing.  Started the computer and the only difference this time was that i did get a brief glimps of the window's xp screen before the blue death screen.
