Usually by default when you do an XP install the initial user is the Administrator or at least has Admin rights. On Windows XP - and we can only talk about legal ways of recovering a password on this forum because of Dell's forum TOS - according to Microsoft if the Admin password is missing or lost the only option is to reinstall.
By the way this is a Software issue, not a hardware issue - this forum section.
Thanks for your suggestion - I have been into safe mode but could not see how to do what you suggest...I did not have a password as such...I seem to have deleted the Admin account and named myself as guest...most things I try are denied as I have no Admin rights...Catch 22
Different Windows versions come with different type of administrator accounts. I would like to know the Windows version on your system and why do want to remove the password?

Press F6 to boot into safe mode and reset password on your account and set up your account as administrator.

I have also tried to follow this suggestion
"Open regedit
Navigate to HKey-local-machine\software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current version\Winlogon\Special accounts\User list
Add the DWORD value 'Administrator' with a value of 1"
But I do not find any of the 6 or 7 selections with the Dword "Administrator" so have not tried to change anything
Matt.
