Lost my PCI simple communications controller
Hi
Dell 2400, three PCI sockets, 256 RAM.....turned it on in the morning and the New Hardware window came up to; "install the PCI Simple Communications Controller"
Now, I've looked all over the World for this driver(s) and now I find that it may be a Motherboard problem. I also find that XP and W2000 do not support the PCI drivers.
The OP System is XPHome.
In inspecting it further, the Modem is not being addressed and this system needs to be on dial up. ( Remote Canada location...no DSL, Cable, or anything but a cold pair of wires) SO...can anybody help me? A newer CPU is in the distant future and I do have a couple of old WIn 98SE systems I can send out, but I think it's only fair that they have something a little faster than 266 Megga Hurts, even though it screems on dial up! ( Dell 266, of course!)

Are you saying that your dial-up modem is so old that the only drivers you can find for it are for Windows 98?
Dial-up modems are CHEAP.

Thanks...I'll try the URL..
The modem is the original Conexant one and I've tried to install a new dirver for it, but the system won't even recognize the modem as being in the slot. ( original install was the middle slot)
I've moved it to all positions and retried installing the drivers. I suspect the chipcet software. I'll reply to the results after I download the above URL and try it.
Buy the way...I see a further complaint in the log of it getting slower, recently. Hummm...maybe a job for Addaware?
There is also a re-install of the operating system 3 yrs ago but the reason was not given.

Assuming it is the modem....
If it's original to the machine, the driver would be listed under Communications in the link below - entering the service tag should narrow down the options to only the modem it came with, but otherwise you'll need to know which modem it is.

The configuration of the devices (slots, integrated devices, etc.) on the PCI bus is set by the chipset software - doubt that's the problem, but reinstalling the chipset driver listed above wouldn't hurt.
Could also try moving the modem to a new slot and see if it takes there.
In the event it's not the modem (or it's an aftermarket one), looking at the details tab for it in device manager will show 4 digit vendor code and device code you can look up here (e.g., my Conexant modem is VEN_14F1, DEV_2F20).

Actually, if you want to scan for malware the "latest and greatest" used by the security gurus here is probably MBAM (Malwarebytes Anti-Malware), with SuperAntiSpyware a close second. Links below, along with other free alternatives, including some online scanners:
