The install sequence is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset drivers (3) install device drivers such as sound, video, etc.  If you didn't follow this sequence it's probably your problem.  Also, you MUST have Windows XP specific drivers, the Vista drivers will not work.

HERE is the 531 downloads.

I tried reinstalling every driver on the site in the order suggested and still have no sound.  Device manager reports no problems except for an entry under System Devices labeled "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio".  This entry has a yellow circle with a black exclamation point on it.  R-Click/Properties says the following under Device Status "Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)", whatever that means.

I'm certainly no expert, but it sure seems there has to be a way of fixing this.  I can boot my system with a Kubuntu Demo CD, and without loading anything beyond what's on the CD, and without touching my HDD, sound works fine.  That indicates to me that the sound hardware itself is in working order.

The code 37 indicates the audio driver is either incorrect or corrupted, according to Microsoft.

THIS is the correct Windows XP driver for Integrated Audio.  DO NOT install any other sound driver, only the Dell supplied driver.  If some other driver was previously installed (and that's what it sounds like) and it cannot be removed you will have to do a complete new install, using the correct install sequence.

If you can remove (uninstall) what drivers you have now and restart the PC, you MAY be able to install the Dell and it will work.  If not, you are looking at a complete and correct install sequence.
