Low System Reources
We just bought a dell and it keeps freezing up when on the internet. The system resource goes as low as 40%---aol says we need at least 85%.
After visiting whidbey.net, we deleted many programs from startup but are still having problems. There were some programs not addressed and am wondering if these can be deleted from startup as well. They are:
ctfmon.exe, msmsgs, microsoftintellitypepro, mosearch, navapw32, and speedkey.
Thanks,

Msmsgs is MSN Messenger Service. Unless you use it frequently it doesn't need to start at boot up. Navapw32 is associated with Norton Antivirus and is required. The Intellitype Pro and Speedkey are associated with your keyboard. I have neither, so don't know if they are required or not.
I was unable to determine what mosearch or ctfmon.exe are associated with. You might find them in Windows Explorer, right-click and select Properties, and determine from that what application they are associated with.
Besides being one of the least attractive programs available, AOL's tech support is giving you a load of garbage when they tell you that you must have 85% system resources available for browsing. If that were the case, there would only be about 100 people on the Internet.
Want to make a hyperlink in your post, want to add a graphic or sound file, need to troubleshoot a non-working Java applet, want to build an attractive signature? These capabilities can be yours if you visit Denny's DellT@lk Tutorials.

The msmsgs is MSN Messenger Service and this could be causing all of your problems since there is a real incompatablity between Microsoft and AOL.
Take MSN out of the startup and see what happens.
Personally, I would consider changing to a REAL ISP but that might not be a choice with you.

I am having the same problems, nut not just when I am on the internet. It seems to be Okay (95%) when I first startup but drops the longer I have it one. mine has also gone sown to 40%. I have deleted as many files and programs that I can. I need everything else left on here. There has to be something we can do because I have never had this problem with any other computer. It really worries me as this is my work computer. Have you found any other answers that have worked besides the two replies? I don't use AOL - so I know that can't be it. Let me know if you find out anything that helps.
Thanks, Hilliary Morris

A web search turned up a reference to the ctfmon.exe being a Utility connected to software produced by Gresham . If you have any of their software installed then you could check with them to see if this Utility is required to be running full time.
To LadyLaw--
System Resources are limited in size and some programs do a terrible job of releasing alocated memory when they are shut down. There is the possiblilty that you have a program that is "leaking memory" and isolating it, then repairing/replacing it should solve the problem. Beyond that, rebooting every once in awhile or installing one of the Memory Manager programs are really your only choice.

Thanks so much for your reply and help. I realize aol does give out alot of "garbage", but still don't understand what is causing the computer to freeze when only on the internet---unless it is low system resource.
Anyway, I'm going to try your suggestions and let you know.

Thanks. Actually, I'm not all that thrilled with aol either, and have been told to get a real isp before. My sister switched from aol to msn and doesn't like them any better.
Any suggestions? Many of the isp's don't have local access numbers in my area.
Thanks,

Here are a couple of websites Dell directed me to. Completed everything on the startup problems--that didn't work. Haven't tried everything else yet. Will let you know.
The sites are: www2.whidbey.net and www.users.erols.com/philkent/ComputerHowToIncreaseSystemResources.htm

I wish that I could say that one ISP is the best but, it really varies. My experience with the "Large" national ones has not been very pleasent--AOL & MSN being the worst. I have a friend who is very happy with Earthlink though. We have 4 "local" ISP's here and I have been connected to 3 of them and wouldn't bother with the 4th so as you can see, they all have problems, it's just finding the one that has the least!
Having your system "hang" while online is pretty much a problem with the browser--in your case the aol product so please don't blame the Dell. Like Denny said, low resources shouldn't cause this condition. That said, getting help from aol on technical problems can be a very frustrating and a lot of times a futile effort.
Sometimes, you can have a "bad" install of software. This can be corrected by Uninstalling it, Rebooting and then closing down everything except Systray & Explorer by using the Ctrl-Alt-Delete method of calling up the Close Program screen. Installing the software at this point should eliminate any conflicts. The set up of the browser is critical, having all the settings correct for your indiviual location can make a real difference and this can only be done with the help of the ISP. Your phone lines can make a tremendous difference in your connection & can be a real nightmare to get corrected--I personally am just getting through with a month long battle with Sprint and I had a client who's line got changed and it took going to the head of Sprint in our Region to get it fixed.
I hate to be negative, but am being realistic about Internet problems. If you had the same connection with your Gateway and you can still get a satisfactory connection and service with it then I would try the reinstall of the software on the Dell first and work from there. Hope that I have given you some ideas.

Thanks again. We did have to install/reinstall aol software on our gateway as well. Of course, each of their tech's tell you something different. I know more than some of them----and that is very scary!
Today my husband tells me that the computer isn't just freezing while on the internet. He was playing a game last night and 15 min. into the game it froze and he lost everything. Awwwwwwww! Just kidding. Anyway, I thought things would be better with a new computer. I thought Gateway was highly overrated. So, we'll see.
I will try your suggestion though of closing everything before installing the aol software.
Thanks
