M60 CPU upgrade - is this CPU supported?

Hello y'all,

I'm looking to upgrade my Precision M60 CPU with the following:

Intel Pentium Mobile 745 1.8GHz 2Mb L2 Cache Retail
sSpec: SL7EN

Clock Speed: 1.8 GHz
Bus Speed: 400 MHz
Processor Socket: 478-pin
Packaging Type: Micro FCPGA
Cache Level:1 Size  32 KB
Cache Memory  Installed Size: L2 Cache - 2 MB
Type: Advanced Transfer Cache
Expansion / Connectivity  Compatible Slots: 1 x processor - 478-pin Micro FCPGA
I'm new to upgrading at this sort of level and would love to hear it from somebody here that the components are compatible (or not!). I have the latest BIOS installed on the machine.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks! :smileywink:

If Dell sold the M60 with that processor then it will work (I believe they did). Be aware that two different memory speeds were used in the M60. Where did you buy the replacement processor?

Yes, that CPU (as well as the 2.0GHz CPU at 400MHz FSB) will work just fine in the M60.

Hi!

Thanks for the reply. I'm looking at a processor for sale at www.ebuyer.co.uk

I recently bought an additional 512K module to up the RAM to 1GB, from www.crucial.co.uk, and their little support app told me that I needed PC2100 memory.

Does that change the compatibility of the CPU?

Once again, my thanks for taking the time to answer my query - it is very much appreciated.

Regards,

Oli

The CPU will be fine regardless of the type of memory installed; however, if you have one module of PC2100 & one module of PC2700, the memory will default to the lower PC2100.
