Manuals - software

Received my new Inspiron 3000 series computer yesterday. Found no manuals and NO OS or other cds in the box. Is this correct? If so, how do you reload if you have a major problem?

You make a recovery usb flash drive form 16gig or larger media using dell backup and recovery.

There are four ways to open the Dell Backup and Recovery Application:

  1. Point to the right of the screen and when the charms bar comes up, click
Search then type in Dell Backup and Recovery.
    Click Dell Backup and Recovery.
  2. Press the Windows Start button, click the Dell Backup and Recovery tile.
  3. Right- click on the Start screen, click All Apps and then click
the Dell Backup and Recovery tile.
  4. Open the My Dell Support Center tile from the Start screen and
click Backup. Click Launch Recovery Tool.

There are 2 scenarios where customers will have incompatibility issues after upgrading to Windows (8.1):
  • Customers will not be able to restore from the local Windows 8 factory image.
  • Customers will not be able to restore from a Windows 8 System Backup.

Solution: Customer will need to update Dell Backup and Recovery online after the Windows upgrade is complete.

To do this:
1. Open Dell Backup and Recovery and click on the “Update” tile.
2. Click on the “Check Now” box and follow the prompts until the process is complete.

After updating Dell Backup and Recovery, you should re-create your recovery media.

If you are a Premium user, Dell Backup and Recovery will automatically do a new System Backup right after the update process.

Thanks for the info! The model is 3847. Is there a link to the manual? Also, when going to the link to get the CD set they ask for a service tag. Do I have one ??? where is it?

Since you didn't post your exact model, I can't give you and exact link, but the manuals can be obtained from http://support.dell.com.

Dell, HP, and all major OEM's no longer include Windows installation media with their computers.  They include a "recovery partition" that can be used to restore your OS in the event a reinstall is necessary.  It also includes software to create recovery disks (or USB) that can be used to restore the computer in the event of a hard drive replacement.

If you want the Windows installation media, you can request it here, if in the US:
https://www.dell.com/support/diagnostics/us/en/19/nondiagnostichome

If you aren't in the US, you will need to call Support to order it.

Service Tag and Serial number are one and the same thing.  There are 3 different places that have the tag.

One is in the CMOS Setup.   One is a barcode on the back.   One is usually on the front or top with Express service code and service tag.
