max processor speed for precision 530 ????

I have dell precision 530 with single xeon 2.ghz processor , and i'm about to upgrade my dell. I found a guy who has matched 2.6 Ghz xeon processors with voltage regulators. He told me that this processors work with precision 530. I heard that 530 works only with 2.4 ghz max processor speed, help please.

For your information I'm using a 2.8 GHz xeon in my 530. It works very nice and I'm hoping to find another 2.8 as soon as I got the money for it. The biggest problem so far have been to find a cheap Kit of heatsink, VRM and clips.

By the way, I've heard from a trusted source that the 530 motherboard can be modified to use a 533 bus-speed. If anybody know how to do so please contact me.

Try both processors separatedly and check the stepping value in bios for the processor. If it's not the same for both, then that is your problem, but if it really does show to be same value then I can't  help any further. Bios normaly tells when the processors aren't matched. I don't think there is any option to enable or disable the processors.

the 530 shipped with 2 diff motherboards - if you bought the early 530's - your mobo cant handle above 2ghz - but if you got the 2nd revsion released i think only a few months later - then you can go upto 3ghz.

There is a LOT of confusion out there about upgrading 530 processors, and a lot of people who have bought processors that don't work.  No wonder with the mobo change and the array of processors that are out there.  The CPU speed only gives one of about ten variables.  I am thinking of an upgrade to 2.4's (as a compromise of speed and $$), but here are the options listed by Intel:

sSpec# CPU Speed Bus Speed Mfg. Tech Stepping Cache Size Package Type SL6YV 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron D1 512 KB 603 pin PPGA SL6W8 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron D1 512 KB 603 pin PPGA SL6K2 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron C1 512 KB 603 pin PPGA SL6EP 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron C1 512 KB 603 pin PPGA SL687 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron B0 512 KB 603 pin PPGA SL65T 2.40 GHz 400 MHz 0.13 micron B0 512 KB 603 pin PPGA

Even with the same stepping, there are slight differences in the processors in voltage or in the notes.

So, can anybody direct us to a reference for the CORRECT sSpec# for a 530 with mobo 3N384???

Thanks,

Jim

PS: I am thinking the SL6K2 is correct because it has the same core voltage as my present processors and the note says "This processor's L2 cache has a 64GB address range and supports ECC."  Can anyone confirm that?

I bought mine from Ebay, as a kit with a 2.2 GHz Processor wich I don't need since I already have a 2.8 GHz, so if anybody's interested I got one 2.2 GHz Xeon for sale.

What is the sSpec#?  You can email me at jdlowene@hotmail.com.

Thanks

I had the same problem as a lot of the rest of you.  The early motherboard in theprec 530 is junk.  As shown you can't use 1.5V XEONs so you are cut off at 2.0 GHz unless you have rev 01+  I guess.  rev00 is the garbage one.

As far as parts go you can get darn cheap procs at www.starmicro.net and you can get the heat sinks for $15 there as well.  The one caveat is you still probably need to get a VRM which I found to be very cheap at www.used-pcs.com and they are working great.  So for $110  I went from one 1.4GHz Xeon to 2 * 2.0 GHz Xeons.  There is a noticeable difference.
