I have a Dimension 3000 that was brought like six years ago it has 512MB and I want to upgrade it. Dell says to buy two 1GB or 2 512MB on those product pages I was wonderig if I could get 2 1GB it says my computers max is like 2GB and I didn't know f that was including the 512MB it came with or doesthat come out when I install the new ones or is it the 512MB it came with and the 2 1GBs? If I get 1 512MB does that give my computer 1 GB total or should I buy 2 512MB? Is it better to buy 2 512MB so that theres a matchig pair or buy 1 1GB?

DDR memory modules in the 3000, should be installed in pairs of matched memory size. If the DDR memory modules are not installed in matched pairs, the computer will operate, but with a slight reduction in performance
The maximum memory the Dimension 3000 supports is 2gb.
To have the best performance, you should buy 2 x 1gb modules.

Is Dead on. DDR memory modules should be installed in pairs of matched memory size. You only have 4 slots.
So if you leave your old memory in you still have the 500 Meg, You only have 2 slots left.
If you put in a pair of 500 meg DDR modules you will have added 1 Gig of RAM: you are up to 1.5 Gig.
If you really need that other 500 meg of Ram, you could buy four 500 Meg DDR modules, pull your old memory,
install the new and you are up to 2 Gig of RAM.
It would be more effective to remove your old memory and install two 1 Gig Modules.
You will be at 2 Gig which Tiffanny Ann pointed out will give the best performance and max out your memory addressing capability.

Dimension 3000 systems do not have four memory slots, they have two.
