Microsoft Update killed Video Drivers

Windows 2000 on a optiplex gx260.  Auto download Critical updates is turned on.  Critical updates loaded and rebooted the machine.  After reboot the video settings dropped to 600x480 at 16 bit.  Tried updating the drivers from Dell, uninstalling and reinstalling drivers as well for the Intel 82845G/GL/GE.

Any help would be great!

(Not sure what BK### it was that caused the problem.)

Install directx 9.0c and then install the updates again.

I'm having the same problem, but the directx solution didn't fix it.  Any other suggestions?

We are having the same issue with multiple machines, flashed the Bios, loaded updated drivers, tried the DirectX 9.0c update and re-loaded updates. Still having same issue.

I had tried that earlier, it didn't work for me...Uninstalled all the latest updates, that was a no go too.

I found something on the microsoft forums, and so far it's worked on two of our GX260's.

After the update has been installed and everything is messed up, uninstall your display device under the device manager.
Reboot
Run through the found new hardware manager.
Reboot.
Should be good to go now.

Hope this helps

I wish I could help more, but that's the only way I've found that works so far (beside restoring the computer over and over and over, or disabling automatic updates).

If you are running xp, drivers roll back worked.

The only other temp solution we have found so far is to put another video card in.  Stupid but when you have to get things done...

Well, automatic updates downloaded it again.  I went to the automatic update site, and I'm going to try and see if hiding the update will work.

Has anyone tried this yet, or has anyone figured out a solution to this problem.

You can set the automatic updates to prompt you for install, then check to see what it has downlaoded before you install.
