Mom needs help before son picks up computer
Where to start?
First, I'm not even sure where to post my problems.
In a "nut shell" all I want to do is get this computer back to the state in was in when we first got it. Yes, I've read about reinstalling. But that too, confuses me. First of all we only got the reinstallation cd MS windows XP Professional including service pack 1a but not the reinstallation cd ms windows xp home edition.
Problems are:
1) at start up there's a pop-up window that says, McAfee VirusScan, an error occurred while initializing ActiveShield. Your system might be running out of resources or disk space. Please close other applications and try restarting ActiveShield. Clicking "ok" twice then gives me the following,
Run time error Progra~1/mcafee.com/agent/mcagent.exe
R6025 - pure virtual function call.
I click ok and it disappears
Another problem is, which actually started before the McAfee issue, is when I start the computer I get a pop-up about Sonic Update Manager .. to insert the Sonic update manager disk. This disk did not come with the computer. Sonic.com/support has not been of any help. Not even a hint. Other then buy something.
Also, when turning off the computer I have to do Ctrl/Alt/delete which brings up the task manager and I have to end each program.
I'm in a real mess. Please help. All I really want is to restore the computer to the way it was out of the box. I don't care about losing any data/ bookmarks/etc
I have even tried change/remove and all I get is a window that tells me an udate is in process and to try again later.
All this started when I tried to burn my first CD and discovered that the CD-RW tray would not open. Dell support sent, via email instruction for this but that to was over my head. The only way I've been able to open the CD-RW tray is with a paper clip.
I know this is a real mess, but so is trying to call and have the patience to wait to speak to some one .. anyone.
I can follow some of the instructions from various forums, but then I get lost.I really need the most basic help. Things about parations, etc only confus me more.
help help

Your computer came with either XP Home or XP Professional. From your post it appears that it came with XP Professional, since that is the reintallation CD you received. You don't get both operating systems.
A set of basic instructions for reinstalling XP with links to illustrated sites is located here. Until you have reinstalled XP and the appropriate drivers there is no point it attempting to troubleshoot the other errors you detail in your post.
After you reinstall XP and system drivers make sure you enable XP's Internet Connection Firewall before you go online to prevent infection from the W32.Blaster virus. Instructions for this are here.
Since this is a software problem, I'd recommend that if you need further assitance you post any additional questions in the Software - Windows XP conference.

Okay, I've re-installed windows XP. That got rid of the sonic update manager and Activeshield issues.Along with some factory installed stuff like real player. However, I'm still having the orginal problem:
The E drive (cd-rw) tray will not open. I've tried direct cd right click, eject, nothing happens. When I high light and look at the properties the computer recognizes the E dirve, tells me it's working. At least now the light on the E drive comes on, but I still have to use a paper clip to open the tray, and even with a blank cd in the E drive when I click "burn" (useing windows media player or sonic recordnow) I get a message to insert a disk in the drive.
There must be something I'm not doing right, or totally over looking.
Suggestions?
