Mouse Freeze/system lock up

I have a Dimension 4100, P-3, 866 Mhz, 384 Mg ram, running W98 SE. I have tried just about everything to correct this problem. Please help! Whenever I go on line, my mouse locks up and the system freezes. I have to clt alt del to re-start the system. Keep in mind this only happens when I'm on line. There are no conflicts anywhere on the system and with the execption of this issue everthing else is perfect. Note I use DSL not dial up. I do have a modem but it's only used as a fax. To save time, here is what I've done: checked mouse OK, checked equip. conflicts OK, moved ethernet card to a different pci slot, no help, removed all/any dust, removed all add on's and re-installed them, no change. If I remove all from the start up menu (msconfig) I noticed it takes a little longer to freeze or lock up.

I'm experiencing the same exact problem with my Dimension 4100 733mhz. It happened at college on a T1 LAN connection and at home with a Linksys DSL router. I think it has something to do with a microsoft update, since it starts happening at that point when I recovered my software (after formatting 3 times).

I have been having a similar problem with the mouse freezing up and acting erratically but not only online.  And I do not have DSL.  After the computer is on for a while, the mouse just starts being difficult to move.  I have changed the speed on the mouse settings but that did not work.  Any information on what direction I should take?  Thanks for sharing.

Did anyone ever find a solution to this problem?  My Dimension L933R is just about unusable because of this.

I fixed my problem by getting a new mouse. I believe the old ps/2 mouse just couldn't cut it anymore so I swapped it for a USB microsoft optical one and so far no more problems
