After the XP reinstall you must first install the chipset driver, then the integrated audio driver, and then the audigy 2 driver.  Is this the order you installed the drivers?  If not, start over and give it a try.  Also be sure the integrated audio is enabled in the bios setup program.  All drivers are here:

Forgive me for being a buttinski, but I think "The Old One" has the Audigy 2 PCI card, not the Audigy MB software.  Assuming that's the case, the install order would be DSS, Chipset, Video, then the Audigy2 CD, and integrated should be OFF in the BIOS.

Possibly, but the driver downloads for the 8300 does list an audigy 2 upgrade driver, indicating the audigy 2 integrated audio was an upgrade to the standard integrated audio for this model.  No problem jumping in --  especially if you're right.  :smileyhappy:

I am 80 and starting to go backwards. When you say start over again do you mean reinstall windows, and what is meant exactly by integrated drivers, would it be asking too much for you to set  out  the process in detail.

Thanks for the help.

There's an easy way to tell exactly what you have.  The diagram below was copied from the 8300 manual.  If you use integrated audio, your speakers plug in to the "line out" in the middle, above the USB ports.   If you have a PCI Audigy2 card, then you plug in to the optional sound card connector.

It's entirely possible that if Dell pre-installed an Audigy 2 card, the audio connectors in the middle are covered up by a cap, in which case you won't see them at all.

Once you post back with which one you have it should clear everything up.

Thanks for your quick reply.

It's the optional sound card connector, the others are covered up.

The recommended driver install order Europa was talking about is in the link below.  Don't worry about the Desktop System Software - in your case it would appear the 8300 doesn't have it (not all models do) so you can skip that.   But if the chipset drivers aren't installed early, it's possible the remaining devices won't be properly recognized.  If you didn't install the chipset first, then it may be a good idea to uninstall any driver software you've put in from Add/Remove programs, reboot, then install the chipset drivers.

As for checking the BIOS (aka System Setup): even though you have an optional sound card, the motherboard may still have integrated audio installed on it.  It should be turned OFF in your system setup, but best to check it to make sure.  If it's turned ON, then your system may be seeing the integrated device instead of your sound card, which is why your Audigy 2 CD won't install.   The system setup instructions are here:

Hopefully that will get you going.
