Network card and browser
I have a Dimension 4500S that first ran XP Home, then RedHat Linux, and now XP Home again.
IE and Netscape Navigator cannot get to Web sites, except for Microsoft and our own internal sites. I have reinstalled the OS, and also both browsers from CDs from Microsoft and Netscape. Still no other Web sites than those mentioned can be found.
From the command line, I can ping any machine anywhere, and domain names pinged from the command line are resolved correctly from the DNS servers (i.e., ping www.abc.com resolves correctly and pings the site).
I believe when RedHat was put on the machine, something in firmware was changed that does not allow the browsers to work. It is NOT a problem with the network card, the network, or DNS.
Does anyone have an idea why this would be?

Thanks for the fast reply.
I did reformat the drive when installing HP Home again, but I believe you are on to something about the boot sector or LILO (frankly, I am ignorant of both these). I would hope the boot sector was formatted, but I'm not sure. With respect to LILO, do you know how this can be addressed?
The XP Home is reinstalled with the disks from Dell. I was thinking of purchasing "real" OS disks and installing the OS again as a strategy.

When XP was reinstalled on the system after the Linux installation, was the drive completely wiped before installing XP? Even the boot sector? I am asking this because the information that you provide points directly to a software issue. If XP was correctly reinstalled, what may have been left from the Linux install? LILO, perhaps? Something on the boot strap which attempts to manage the hardware? Linux should not, in itself, cause any firmware changes to your system.
