No Audio Device

All of a sudden, I have no sound!  Dell Dimension 4550, Windows XP Home Edition.  Speakers are connected and are on, appear to have necessary drivers, but when I go to Control Panel, Sounds & audio device, under Volume tab everything is gray and it reads "No Audio Device",  but under Hardware tab, it shows everything working properly.  Don't know what to do next!

If this was a recent problem, use the System Restore and restore the PC to date when it did work.

System Restore can be accessed under Accessories/System Tools.

Thanks fireberd!  I had already tried System Restore and I can't restore to an earlier date either.  I don't know what is happening to my system, but it is really doing some strange things.  I finally called Dell and they did a remote access and fixed the sound problem.  Don't know yet what is wrong with the System Restore.  I have cleaned up everything I can think of without reinstalling Windows XP.
