No boot device selected: system halted

Hi,

My Dimension 4400 was working fine with two harddrives (Maxtor 80 Gb as master and Maxtor 40 Gb as slave) for several months. Recently Win XP SP2 gave me a blue screen and after rebooting I get a black screen with one single line error message: "No boot device selected: system halted".

The two harddrives are recognized in the BIOS as they were before the blue screen but the machine won't boot. I even installed the two harddrives on a different machine to see if they still worked and they did.

All the other posts in the forum discuss the same topic after installing a new or second harddisk. I got the same problem but without changing anything for nearly a year.

I changed the IDE connector cable and I even connected the harddrives with other power cables (from the CD-Rom and DVD-Rom, that still work) to be sure that is not a cable problem.

While booting the system, it takes over 30 seconds for the machine to complete the "System Ram check" for 256 Mb !?!

Do I need to replace my motherboard ?

Does anyone have an idea of how to resolve this problem ?

Thanx

goge,

This does sound like a BIOS issue.  Clearing NVRAM may very well correct this issue.  You can clear NVRAM on your system as described below:

To clear NVRAM for all devices and restart the computer:

  1. Enter the system setup program.
  2. Press the right-arrow key to move to the Advanced menu.
  3. Select the Boot Configuration submenu by pressing .
  4. Press the down-arrow key to highlight Reset Config Data. Then change the setting to Yes (see "Boot Configuration Submenu").
  5. Press to exit the program and restart the computer.

You might also replace the CMOS battery, and check to make sure the system hasn't slipped into the "CPU Compatibility Mode" (in system setup).

If those check out, the next most likely thing would be a dying hard drive.

First thing I would do is to reset the system defaults. Follow the instructions here:

Thanx a lot,

I just needed to reset the BIOS to the default settings and everything works. I need to replace my RAM. The Microsoft memory diagnostic tool detected a funny behaviour of my RAM. I think the RAM caused the blue screen and did some funny things that leaded to the BIOS problem.

Whatsoever... Everythings works fine again.

Thanx
