No Desktop or start Menu
Hi I just bought a Dimmensions E310 computer and after setting it all up. Everything seems to be working fine and then I install some new software of hardware and it makes my desktop icons and startup menue disappear, so all I see is the blue Dell wallpaper. I did a restore once it started working fine went to install yahoo messenger and now it's doing the same thing again. Any idea what can be causing this? Is there a way to fix it without having to restore it again?
Thanks in advance

try this
turn on computer... tap F8.. you will see advanced option menu.
choose safe mode, press enter again.. let windows load... log on as administrator.. allow windows to start up fully.
close the message window that appears and now do the following-
if you can see your start bar click it go to "run" and type "msconfig"
you will see system configuration utility. at the top of this there will be options.. choose "start up" on this screen there will be an option "disable all" choose it, click apply and close/ok
you will be asked to restart.. click ok
on restart you should see you normal windows bar and icons.
a message also appears.. choose an option on this "don't show this again" and ok it.
this should resolve your problem

Be aware that the shotgun approach to disabling startup programs has probably left your system without a running antivirus program.
A more intelligent approach to the problem is to compare the entries on the startup tab with the list of those here to determine which are "safe" to stop from loading. One of those is the program causing your problem. One of the "required" startups is not.
