not reading sd card
MY studio desktop with windows 8.1 has stopped seeing the sd card. I have updated Windows to the point of being ahead of MS itself (which is not too difficult :emotion-4: and still - the computer does not see the card either at insertion or after reboot. Some forums state that it is a hardware and not a windows problem. I cannot tell if this began happening after Windows' non-stop updates that happen seemingly every 93 seconds.

You cant say it "sees" it or not without running the Disk Management Applet.
It may just need a drive letter assignment or it may be corrupted.
There is also USB Malware that will prevent it from mounting.

I too 'lost' my card reader for my XPS. Somewhere along the many updates for win 8.1 the reader quit
working. It didn't show up in windows explorer. The XD card did show up using a USB reader. So, long
story short, my Realtek PCIE card reader wasn't. I went to the Realtek website and downloaded a zip
file for the latest drivers . Download the zip file and make a folder for it - then run the .exe file within the
new file. If you don't have a Realtek card reader I would suggest going to the mfg. website and
downloading the latest software for your card reader.

Thank you. I know the SD card is not corrupted because I can read it on my tablet, and it works perfectly in my camera. I do nor know what the "DISK MANAGEMENT APPLET" is. I will look into that, though. The way Windows 8.1 pops up a little window right top of the screen when one inserts a card or CD, stating, "Tap here to see what to do with this device" (or similar wording)" is among the most idiotic things MS has ever come up with. Any user inserting a SD card wants to read from or write to it. Who knows why MS opted to use that option is beyond me...

Thank you. In Device Manager, the card readers were shown as GENERIC. Windows informed me that the latest driver is installed. So I took the bold step of uninstalling all the cards. After reboot, voila! the card readers all worked instantly.
